About Chris

Hi! Thank you for viewing my profile. I'm a 39 year-old friendly and engaging teacher who works hard to build a great rapport with my students. I have 15 years' experience in a variety of classrooms, grades 4-12, and also have experience working as a direct service provider for students with reading difficulties. I am currently working as a reading specialist at a local high school. I help students who have learning disabilities to achieve the reading goals on their IEPs.

I am trained in a multi-sensory, explicit, direct approach to reading instruction based on the Orton-Gilligham and Wilson approaches. I hold a Master's in Teaching from Regis College, and received a Reading Specialist certification from the MGH Institute of Health Professions for grades K-12. I also hold an elementary education certificate and a secondary English 6-12 certificate.

The reading training at MGH equipped me for direct, specific, explicit instruction in decoding words, spelling, and reading comprehension at all grade levels. I completed a summer clinic at the MGH Literacy Clinic in Charlestown, where I completed testing and planned instruction for one student's tutorial 3 days a week. I administered informal assessments in order to plan instruction along with formal assessments to diagnose learning disabilities and to monitor progress. I'll be glad to be in touch with your current teachers at school, and as a teacher myself, I am familiar with teachers' expectations and curriculum.

With my years' experience teaching English, I am also available to help proofread your work and assist with grammar, formatting, and sentence structure.

I love my job and am grateful to be able to help students access the material needed for success. I take what I do seriously, and if you contact me, I will do my best to establish a rapport with your child, target a starting point, monitor progress, and keep you informed each step of the way.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I taught American History in grades 4-6. I have also tutored this subject to students in 9th and 10th grades.

Dyslexia

I hold a degree as a Reading Specialist from Mass General Hospital in Boston. I graduated from the Institute of Health Professions. I'm trained in a multisensory, direct, explicit, sequential method of instruction drawing from the Wilson and Orton-Gillingham reading programs. These are designed for students with reading disabilities. I am currently working as a high school reading specialist, and I see several dyslexic students on my case load.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grade, I establish a great rapport with my students, and I am familiar with curriculum and expectations at the elementary level.

English

I have taught English for 13 years, from grades 4-8, and have a great background in teacher's expectations, including literature, grammar, writing, and proofreading.

Grammar

With 15 years' experience teaching Language Arts, I have a strong understanding of grammar. I love the way words work, and enjoy giving my students strong knowledge of sentence structure and grammar.

Literature

I have a middle school Language Arts endorsement and have taught Reading for 5 years.

Piano

I took private piano lessons for 12 years, and have played for church services and school performances. I have also taught private piano lessons for all ages. I read music, and am familiar with a variety of styles.

Proofreading

I've taught English for 13 years, and have a great background in English conventions and proofreading.

Reading

I am trained in decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension instruction through a prescriptive, multisensory model that draws from the OG and Wilson methods. I love teaching others to read and take my work very seriously. I track progress from week to week and set specific goals for each student. I have a reading specialist degree from MGH.

Vocabulary

I've been trained in teaching vocabulary through my reading specialist program at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. I love the way words work, and enjoy helping students see these connections, either through semantics, or by analyzing the structure of a word to understand how its meaning comes together. I would focus on making meaningful connections with related words, and building a knowledge of Greek and Latin roots.

Writing

I have taught ELA for 13 years from grades 4-8. I can help your child work through the writing process and to understand how the process works. We will work on planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing a polished, solid piece of writing.

He is so great!! — I am so happy that I finally found a right tutor to help my 9 year old son's English. After the first class, I could tell he is a very well experienced teacher. He is not only very smart and patient, but also well prepared for each class. He combines basic concepts/elements with creative/critical thinking to come up a comprehensive strategy through his tutoring. Thus, he enhances my son's reading ...
