About John

I am a highly experienced college counselor who worked in the professional field for nearly thirty years. Students and parents, I believe, find me highly informed, current, honest, and candid.

My graduate degrees were received from the University of Notre Dame and the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. I earned certification as a secondary teacher and guidance counselor.

There are three main strengths that I bring to my work with students and families. One is knowing which schools are the best fit for each individual and the unique personality of each student. My previous work abroad and continuing consulting work with international schools provided an extensive knowledge of a vast range of colleges and universities in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia. My years overseas enabled that I counsel U.S. citizens and foreign students living and studying in other countries. These diverse groups both sought advice on choice and acceptance to universities in the U.S. and elsewhere.

A second strength is understanding and appreciating which schools are more appropriate and an acqired skill in matching the performance, abilities and academic skill set of each student to those colleges and universities. Years of practice have developed my ability and wisdom in successfully predicting a student's chance of acceptance and being a comfortable fit at a given college or university.

A third strength is my interest in career guidance. I believe that every student needs to know who they are and what are their true interests. They need to recognize the relationship between their abilities, their personality and their passions and the future direction they wish to head. Once that is accomplished a students can set realistic goals and select the right fit university, program and major.

Finally, I am also quite capable of offering tutoring assistance and advice with college essay writing. Essay writing for college admission requires time, patience and a sixth sense in answering questions a given way.

Furthermore, I am a life-time soccer person with thirty years of coaching both domestically and internationally. If a particular student is seeking a soccer scholarship or hopes to find a college with a soccer program appropriate to their level or abilities I can offer information, advice and insight.

I look forward to you inquiries.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I have thirty years experience in college counseling. During that career I served as the Director of College Counseling in seven schools both in the U.S. and abroad. As a part of those responsibilities I visited five-hundred colleges and universities in the US and around the world. In addition I wrote several handbooks on the college admission process. Today, I remain active in consulting with international schools and I continue to train faculty and staff to be college counselors. Over the past three years I have consulted with schools in Korea, Spain and India in developing and improving their office of college guidance.

My areas of strength in college advising take into account each step in the college admission process. I am especially skilled at working with a wide variety of students, selecting "right fit" schools for each individual, essay development, and advising students and families on career choice and possible majors.
