About Adam

My love of teaching comes out of my love for learning and for sharing knowledge with others. I graduated magna cum laude with high honors in geography from Clark University in Worcester, MA, and went on to get my Master's in geography from the University of Oregon. I wrote a thesis for both of my degrees, and am thus well-versed in multiple styles of writing, active reading and study skills.

I have been a teacher in several capacities since I was in high school; During my time as a Master's student at the University of Oregon I held a position as a graduate teaching fellow, where I worked as a teaching assistant. As a TA I taught discussion sections multiple times a week, wrote and graded exams with other TAs and professors, and worked one-on-one with my students on their papers during my office hours. Furthermore, I have taught classes on the environment, outdoor skills, geography and American history at a youth summer camp for many years.

For those of you out there who are prospective students, please know that I understand what it means to be challenged with certain subjects in school. As a child I had to learn how to learn in order to succeed, and as such I am very willing to work with you at your own pace. Please feel free to get in touch with me regarding any academic help you may need. Thanks for checking out my profile and I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have an BA in geography, and an MA in geography as well. I was a TA in my Master's program, teaching discussion sections for many geography courses. I also have worked as an academic tutor for students taking geography, sociology and anthropology courses.

College Counseling

As someone who has been a tutor and a Teaching Assistant in graduate school, I have had the opportunity to work directly with college students on their writing, essay, and oral communication skills. As a teacher in these environments, I have been trained in what is expected of incoming college students, and how prospective college students should market themselves in applying to undergraduate programs, as a common responsibility of a TA and college tutor is to help undergraduates develop and hone their interests and abilities.

English

As a graduate student I taught undergrads how to read actively, write effectively and in general how to communicate their ideas. As a tutor for undergrads as well I did this as well, with an emphasis on these written and oral communication skills.

Political Science

My undergraduate thesis was an analysis of the internal memoranda from the Bush administration that established the legal status of Guantanamo Bay prisoners. I examined and compared discourse from the White House, Department of Justice and Department of Defense in order to understand the legal protections or lack thereof that were given to prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Social Studies

I have an BA in geography, and an MA in geography as well. I was a TA in my Master's program, teaching discussion sections for many geography courses; these included: geography of immigration, geography of europe, world regional geography, population and environment, among others.

I also have worked as an academic tutor for college students taking geography (introduction to human geography), sociology (intro, social inequality) and anthropology (introduction to cultural anthropology).

My Master's thesis researched hunger striking in prison. I analyzed how prisoners socially organized their hunger strikes based upon racial, ethnic and religious affiliations.

I also teach world history at a community college.

Writing

I've been writing and editing papers for many years, as I've worked as a teacher and tutor before. Whether it's developing paper organization, structure or a persuasive thesis statement I can definitely help your son or daughter with their writing skills and confidence thereof.
