Wondering how people in the Renaissance stayed awake through a Shakespeare play? Feeling mystified by the rules of conjunctions, commas, prepositions, or split infinitives? I can help! With two Bachelor's degrees (Theater Studies, English) and a Master's degree in progress (English and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies), I've spent a lot of time in the classroom both as a student and as a teacher of my peers. While not everyone is a born writer or can immediately understand Renaissance poetry (and I'm no exception!), I have come to believe that with hard work and persistence, anyone can learn to communicate effectively and correctly both verbally and through writing.
As an English tutor, my goal is to demystify English grammar, writing, and literature. No two students are the same, and everyone processes information differently. I meet with each student in order to assess their particular needs and develop an individual plan of study that works for them. Whether that means running through study questions or doing some more intensive work to strengthen basic writing skills, my approach to each student is tailored to the individual in order to help them develop the skills necessary to succeed at the task at hand and beyond.
I tutor mainly in the areas of English grammar, writing, literature (especially the ever popular Shakespeare and his contemporaries), as well as the verbal section of the ACT and SAT. I also assist students with editing and proofreading. In addition to English, I have a strong background in U.S. and European history and public speaking, and I welcome students needing a little extra help in those subjects as well.
I try to be as flexible as possible with my schedule; I also understand that life sometimes gets in the way of plans. However, I do ask for at least 2 hours notice of cancellation for a lesson. Missed lessons or lessons cancelled with less than 2 hours notice will be billed at half the hourly rate.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
After heavy involvement with performance arts (theater, show choir) in high school, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Studies from Huntingdon College. My Theater degree has provided me with skills that translate not just to the stage, but also to areas as diverse as public speaking, research skills and interpretation of multiple forms of information. As a graduate student, I frequently give class presentations that require me to condense complicated ideas into concise spoken presentations. Since effective and succinct communication is a cornerstone of successful public speaking, my training in both performance and academia has helped me become an effective speaker and given me the tools necessary to help others overcome difficulty speaking in front of an audience.
I have been involved in theater for several years, participating in community and school-sponsored productions for about 16 years. After heavy involvement with performance arts (theater, show choir) in high school, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Studies from Huntingdon College. As a result of my studies, I have semi-professional acting, directing, designing, and stage managing experience. My Theater degree has provided me with skills that translate not just to the stage, but also to areas as diverse as public speaking, research skills and interpretation of multiple forms of information.
