About Erna

My Background and Credentials:
I hold a B.A. in English, from UCLA, graduating as Valedictorian and Student Commencement Speaker. Thereafter, I attended Oxford University, where I earned a Master of Studies in European Literature (French) and a Master of Letters in Modern Languages and Literature, in joint supervision with English. The M.Litt. was a research degree, and required a thesis and viva. My thesis was on the collected works of French author and filmmaker, Marguerite Duras, and American author and Pulitzer Prize winner, Willa Cather. That work has, since, been revised and will be published as a monograph by Peter Lang Publishing later this year.

Teaching Experience:
While a graduate student at Oxford, I taught Shakespeare and Literary Theory at the Oxford Access Scheme Summer School, which was designed to introduce Oxford English to college applicants from inner-city schools across the United Kingdom. I also taught French and have been Tutoring English and French (language and literature) since 2002.

I have helped many students, both at home and overseas, gain acceptance to private and selective US public schools, colleges, and graduate programs in the arts, English, French, and other subjects (including science and engineering students needing help with essays and proposals).

College Counseling (Personal Essays, Transfers, Undergraduate & Graduate Studies Applications):
One of my specialities is college counseling. I help students write, revise and 'package' their college and graduate school applications to give them an advantage in the selection process. I specifically help students bring their Personal Essays to top form, helping many to gain acceptance to the program of their choice. My students, in the past, have either attended or been admitted to: BA, MA, MBA, or PhD programs at UCLA, USC, Amherst College, MIT and Beijing Film Academy's Film Producer Program.

Broadcasting and Public Speaking record:
Over the last 20 years, I have given lectures, speeches or public readings at: UCLA, the San Francisco Writers Conference, the Norwegian Consulate in NY, the International Women's Writing Guild, Oxford University, Drew University, and the Roehampton Institute, in London. I have also been broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Radio 4, and recently did a commercial for Womanade, Boston.

Approach/Methods (online and in-person):
I have worked both in person and online, so either format works for me. I generally ask for specific goals, needs, and requirements to cover some history of students' recent performance levels to determine where they are in their process and/or skill set. For writing assistance, I usually require a sample paper, writing passage, or essay. I then discuss specific ways to approach meeting goals and deadlines, with a realistic timetable of achievement.

Supervision:
If the student has a regular teacher or college supervisor and/or a pre-set examination or submission date, I like to have this information and any other relevant requirements in advance, so we can successfully meet the student's needs.

Standards and Publishing Formats:
I am familiar with US, UK and other international school and college application procedures, as well as various American and European formatting standards for theses, dissertations, and academic books.

Age Range:
I have taught students from the ages of 9 to undergraduate and postgraduate college students, as well as working professionals in publishing, theatre, business, law, and film. I have assisted grammar school students with writing their first essays and helped Master's degree and PhD students write, format, and submit their theses according to expected standards and guidelines.

Track Record of Success:
Many of my students have published or produced books and articles I have helped them to write or revise, including full-time professors in academia. Many of my high school students have been accepted to private schools and colleges after working with me. I have also helped undergraduates, at Tufts University, gain substantial grants or financial awards for college and academic achievement.

Study Abroad Preparation:
I especially enjoy helping others embarking on their university careers and preparing them for anticipated cultural, travel-related, and academic transitions, including study abroad programs. I am familiar, in particular, with the VISA application procedures for American nationals studying in England and France.

Contact:
I am happy to discuss your specific needs and answer any questions you may have. Please send me an EMAIL, in the first instance. I will respond in a timely manner.

I look forward to helping you achieve academic excellence!

Thank you for reading my profile.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

French

I have taken and passed the French teaching qualification exam on the WyzAnt website. I also hold an M.St. and M.Litt. in French and English from Oxford University.
