Boston College (Master's)
I am currently a 7th Grade Spanish teacher in Acton, teaching first year Spanish. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education and Hispanic Studies from Boston College, Class of 2012, Cum Laude. I returned to Boston College to complete a 1 year Master's program in Curriculum and Instruction. During that time, I was a Supervisor of practicum students, providing student teachers with feedback on their instruction.
I have experience with all levels of Spanish learners after working with Spanish 1- Spanish 4 Honors during my practicum experiences. I assumed the temporary position as the lead teacher in a Spanish 1 class and a Spanish 2 Honors class and worked with the students on building proficiency with the language. I studied abroad in Granada, Spain during Spring 2011, where I also completed an International practicum, and am passionate about sharing Hispanic culture with my students. Further, I received a 5 on the AP Spanish Language test in high school and am capable of preparing students for the exam.
I believe that students build proficiency with a language through continual practice that uses the language in different ways, rather than primarily using drills. Students should be exposed to the language through reading, writing, and listening activities while being encouraged to orally use the language. I can alter the types of activities according to what the student appears to need to build on, since all students are unique with their learning styles and abilities. I can offer a complete immersion experience since I have studied Spanish for 12 years and have built on my proficiency throughout my teaching experience and time abroad.
During the summer, I work with a recreation day camp and have experience with children ages seven to eleven. I accompany them on field trips and work with both the children and their parents to ensure that the campers have a fun, safe summer. Erin has great enthusiasm and a deep of knowledge of Spanish. She is an energetic, focused, thoughtful and creative tutor. She also works very hard between sessions to prepare materials to reinforce concepts. She also recommends study priorities before the end of a session which is extremely helpful. Working with Erin has been like hitting the jackpot!
Our first experience with WyzAnt, Erin is great! We've had one lesson so far, we asked if she could help my daughter prepare for a large test she was very nervous about. Erin arrived with vocabulary aids and materials in hand. Erin helped her figure out where to concentrate her efforts and gave her helpful hints and tricks of the trade to assist her studying. My daughter is so pleased--she feels confident about the test and and her ability to do well in the class.
My daughter had been doing well in Spanish all year but lost her confidence after missing a number of classes due to illness. Erin was very flexible in fitting her into her schedule and within a few sessions had gotten her caught up again and headed into finals feeling confident.
My HS freshman daughter was struggling with Spanish at the end of last year. It was her weakest subject. After working with Erin, my daughter has responded very well to the professional and proactive support that Erin has provided to her. Now her highest average is in Spanish! Erin is extremely patient and is able to help focus my daughter on the subject matter while also definitely providing strategic help to allow her to have better study skills overall.
Erin is very organized and spends time preparing for lessons with a student's specific needs and requests in mind. She is enthusiastic and easily engages children in a variety of fun games and activities. Given her background, she is an experienced teacher and dedicated to teaching.
Our son was so afraid of having a tutor come to work with him, but right after Erin's first session, he thanked me! Erin possesses tremendous patience. She was able to make him totally at ease and he was not intimidated in the least. She is able to get him to laugh and relax while learning. Erin has such a bubbly personality. She had ways of helping him learn while making it fun. He is all caught up now but will look forward to seeing Erin again when he is in need of help.
Erin, has been everything we could ask for, professional, knowledgeable and caring. My daughter's grades and subject knowledge have shown a dramatic improvement.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
