In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching ESL in accredited international schools for the past six years. For the past four years, I have been teaching elementary and middle school students at Colegio Los Nogales in Bogota, Colombia. Previous to that, I was an elementary teacher at the Casablanca American School in Casablanca, Morocco. I speak Spanish as well.
In my ESL or ELA classes, I teach oral speaking skills. This includes public speaking. At least once each bimester, students have to share their learning in front of an audience or debate ideas, and skills are taught to make for effective presentations, speeches, and debates.
I have had special needs cases in my own classrooms and, as a long-term substitute teacher, I have worked in self-contained classrooms. In these classes, I have worked with emotionally impaired students, autism and Aspergers, and students with mental retardation.
Teaching study skills is part of what makes an effective teacher. As a teacher, I teach study skills each day in my classroom.
