I have been teaching college biology and chemistry courses since 2009 including introductory biology, anatomy and physiology, and general chemistry.

The keystone of my tutoring philosophy is that good tutors impart to their students much more than just subject knowledge. Through dedicated teaching and mentoring, tutors can encourage students to assume responsibility for their own continued learning.

In addition to encouraging students to adopt self-directed learning, a tutor should strive to present new information to students in ways that give them the best opportunity to assimilate it. The best means that I know of to accomplish this is to review key elements of background material and then ask, "What are we still missing?", or,"What's next?" By helping students consolidate their existing knowledge immediately before adding new information, tutors can help them learn better by simple temporal association. Also, through interactive/interrogative teaching, a tutor can offer his/her students the opportunity to map their own path to new knowledge. I think the best chance for students to effectively integrate new concepts and information into their existing knowledge comes when the students can use strategies for learning they already possess.

After graduating from college, I worked for the Upjohn Company for 3 years as a biochemistry assistant in the CNS Diseases Research Unit. My work at Upjohn involved screening of NCEs for anxiolytic and cognition-enhancing properties. From 1995-2009 I worked at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in the Department of Neurology. For the last 10 years at MGH I was the Principal Investigator in a research laboratory investigating targeted delivery of therapeutic proteins to the CNS.

So Helpful to Daughter

Jonathan was great at communicating his availability, then was the 3rd Chem tutor for our daughter but the first one who helped her to understand, and also gave me thorough summaries of their time together. Our daughter’s Chem scores have considerably improved with Jonathan’s help, and we’ll definitely use him again.

knowledgeable easy to work with understand pathophysiology at any level.

Mr. Jonathan helped me talk through the biological process of action potentials, membrane potential how water soluble & fat soluble hormones get into a cell. He also help me understand the hypothalamus-pituitary axis in a meaningful way; where each process begins what it does and the negative FB loops involved. Along with some of the pathophysiology involved with target organ malfunction. I liked that he listened to me explain and if I had difficulty explaining he would ask me a question that would help trigger my memory and lead me down the right path. Through his coaching and tutoring I was able to understand and explain the disease states that evolve through disruption of negative FB systems within the body. My stress anxiety before testing was less, I had more confidence and scored one grade letter better on my test. I was pleased with his teaching method and his patients with me and will definitely use him again. I highly recommend him !

Excelent tutor and extremely knowledgeable

Jonathan is by far the best tutor my daughter has ever met. His organizational skills, and ability to understand the needs of a student and help him/her progress are exceptional. He is also very patient and respectful. My daughter was not only impressed with his knowledge but also with his directness and clarity when explaining a subject. She is very pleased with him, and with his help has learned how to connect the material and organize it to better comprehend its complexity and truly immerse herself in a productive learning experience. We look forward to more tutoring sessions as the year concludes.
