Bio

I am an educator and editor with over 20 years of experience, but what makes me so effective is my ability to relate to teenagers and find ways to make them enjoy English writing, reading, comprehension, and, yes, even grammar. I have worked professionally as an editor, teacher, tutor, and artist. I am an educator and editor with over 20 years of experience, but what makes me so effective is my ability to relate to teenagers and find ways to make them enjoy English writing, reading, comprehension, and, yes, even grammar. I have worked professionally as an editor, teacher, tutor, and artist. I believe that English reading and writing should be accessible to all students, whether they intend to study literature or are headed into other fields, such mathematics or engineering. I love finding ways to get my students to connect with or enjoy English and am willing to try many different methods of teaching to achieve that end.

One of my many mantras is that English is not just about books, but is about life. I love it when a student who has previously disliked a reading or writing assignment finds something that he or she can become interested in. When I can help a student find something in his or her life that resonates within the English work they have been assigned, then I have succeeded in making English meaningful to the student. When students are invested in what they are learning, they succeed! My goal is not to make students love every book they read, but to make writing and reading easier and more enjoyable.

I have a Master's in English Literature, have taught at community colleges, tutored privately, and edited professionally. In addition, some of my own writing has been published. I have helped students craft their College Application Essays; and every one of them has been accepted to one of their top choices! I have worked with students with learning differences, as well, and am able to explain things in multiple ways, depending on how each student learns best. English is a combination of reading, vocabulary, processing and synthesizing information, grammar, and then writing down your ideas and responses. I can help break down each aspect of English to strengthen your skills and help you succeed.

The ability to read and write is important no matter what your interests are or what your planned profession may be. I am here to make reading and writing easier and more enjoyable for you. In each session, we focus on what needs to be completed while maintaining a sense of humor and finding ways to make the subject material interesting to you. I am happy to provide reference on request and am flexible with my teaching hours. Contact me to learn more and see if you would like to work with me to make English fun!

Grammar,

Grammar

I have been a professional editor for over 20 years and am excellent with grammar and sentence structure. In addition, as a Master's of English Literature, I understand the "crazy" ways that English works and can help make those rules easier for students.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Proofreading is boring for most people, but it is an essential skill to succeed. I help students find errors in their writing and teach them how to proofread more effectively. Oftentimes, the best way to proofread is to read your writing out loud, which is much less boring and very effective at finding awkward phrasing. The next step is to look for grammatical errors, which is what I will show my students how to do.

Reading,

Reading

Reading requires patience and the ability to notice what you like to read and what you do not like to read. I help students develop skills to improve the quality of their reading, such as re-reading the first paragraph and last paragraph of chapters and books, or helping them increase their vocabulary so that sentences make sense. In addition, I tach students how to paraphrase difficult sentences so that the meaning becomes clearer.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I have edited for companies, professors, and individuals. I have taught English literature and language at multiple levels, including, but not limited to, middles school, high school, and college. I have also tutored foreign students to help them increase their vocabulary and pass the TOEFL examination.

Finding ways to make English interesting to students is my passion, and I have worked with students in middle school, high school, and college, as well as professional adults. I tailor each session to fit the student's needs and interests, while working on grammar, syntax, comprehension, organization, and vocabulary. Having worked with native English speakers and foreign language speakers, I am able to present information clearly and specifically suited to each student's strengths.

I have achieved both a BA and MA in English and American Literature and have studied literature from other countries and cultures, as well. I can always find a way to make literature interesting to students by helping them find a connection to the writing.
