Bio

I'm a math teacher at a local High School. I have accumulated hundreds and hundreds of hour tutoring one on one. Normally, I don't tutor during the school year, but I know that there's so many calculus students that're all of a sudden on their own while still accountable for formidable finals. Whether you're a college student, AP student or just trying to squeak out a passing grade in Algebra 2, I'm here for you. Our first session together is always free to ensure a good fit.

I graduated in 2015 with honors in Mathematics from Occidental College in Los Angeles. I studied both pure and applied math such as Topology and Numerical Analysis. It was at Occidental that I developed a passion for tutoring the diverse array of students who study calculus, from high school students challenging themselves to college students fulfilling their math requirement for their biology major. Even as I delved deeper into mathematics, I have always found great joy in teaching and tutoring calculus.

Aside from my experience with Wyzant I have more than 600 hours working as a private one on one tutor. I tutor at every level between sixth grade math and third semester college calculus. I've worked with students from public school, preparatory schools and all levels of college. Recently, many of my tutoring clients have been first and second semester calculus students at Umass Amherst.

Other subjects that I tutor in include algebra one and two, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, linear algebra, discrete math and middle school math. Please note that if you don't see the subject that you would like help with listed here, please reach out to inquire if I can help. Chances are, I've seen the material under a different name.

Feel free to reach out to me to discuss subject matter that you may want help in. Please include some details about what you are studying, problems you are running into on your own and what you are looking for in a tutor.

Elementary Math

I have helped several elementary students improve their grades in math and also develop best practices moving forward. I credit this success to my sensitivity to a student's understanding. I also make sure that I put math into context that elementary students can understand. Finally I make sure to bring enthusiasm to encourage my students that math can be easy.

With my vast tutoring experience, I've seen that learning math is akin to learning a language. As such, a math student cannot be without a strong set of algebra tools, the same way that you cannot learn a language without knowing the basics. While in college, I amassed over 250 hours of tutoring experience for many students between 6th grade math and advanced calculus courses. Graduating with honors in mathematics in 2015 I bring excitement and experience to the tutoring table.

In my many hours of tutoring experience, I have tutored extensively in calculus. Often in calculus, subject matter from high school algebra classes becomes essential. As a result, I have become more than adept at coming up with examples and helping students reach a deep understanding of the subject with the years ahead in mind.

I have helped several pre algebra students improve their grades and develop best practices for their math careers. When working with students at this level I find it’s important to use real life examples to given context to the problems at hand.

In college my specialty was applied mathematics, which often required proficiency with basic concepts from calculus and pre calculus. Moreover many of my students have reported that my lessons one year have stayed with them for multiple years. This includes study habits and well taught concepts that continue to resurface in courses down the road.

Excellent Teacher

James is a math teacher and he is excellent at patiently explaining math concepts, in our case its pre-calculus. We enjoy working with James so much that we will continue over the summer and next school year with calculus. thank you James!

Precalculus Help

James helped my son better understand Sinusoidal Functions and Cosine Functions as well as other basic trigonometry material. He was great we will continue to use his help!

Knowledgeable, patient with good sense of humor.

Jim teaches my 9th high school son Algebra 1. He is flexible and generous with his knowledge. We even get to review some fundamental math that even I, as a parent, is able to benefit from (my math has always been weak, I'm more of a language arts type person). With 13+ lessons completed, my son is in a better place where he is able to apply what he has learned to his school work and everyday life, thanks to Jim!

Very effective

James clearly knows the material and how to communicate. Very effective in helping my son understand the math and the concepts behind the mechanics. Thanks, James.

Patient and knowledgeable teacher!

Jim has helped me so much with my college calculus coursework. He is very patient when working through a problem or helping me understand a new concept. His thoroughness and encouragement have helped me gain confidence in my abilities and I have even started helping other students. I would (and have) recommend Jim to anyone in search of a math tutor.

Great tutor and committed to his students! Recommended

James has great knowledge of the subject he is teaching my child. He takes the time to explain it in a manner that she can understand and grasp. He is very patient and works to develop confidence! My daughter has had tutors in the past, but Jim has helped her the most! He keeps in touch with us to see how she is doing, especially when she had her midterms a couple weeks ago. We highly recommend him!

Great algebra II tutor

James has given our daughter Frances much more confidence in just a few short weeks! It's so great to see her do her homework with ease. She is even helping some of her classmates! Could not have done it without his help.

Knowledgeable Tutor

James had been working with my son Ben to help him understand precalculus. My son is close to his finally and needs a lot of support. James is patient and works through the problems that Ben struggles with. James has ideas and strategies that he shares to help Ben relate to the work he needs to complete. He has been a great help.
