Bio

I work a lot with kids who are different kinds of learners and for whom school (or even homeschool) is a struggle, where learning is or isn't. I've taught in public, private, alternative schools, and homeschooling settings, as well as having run an alternative school for gifted 7th -12th graders for six years. I work a lot with kids who are different kinds of learners and for whom school (or even homeschool) is a struggle, where learning is or isn't. I've taught in public, private, alternative schools, and homeschooling settings, as well as having run an alternative school for gifted 7th -12th graders for six years. I also consult with schools and therapists to find the best way to help a child move forward.

Often the goal in tutoring is to nurture the independent learning, thinking, and planning skills that will help a student to need a tutor less often or not at all! I bring high energy and enthusiasm to the table, along with a keen sense for individual learning styles. Be forewarned that I am inclined to wordplay.

Theater

I have been teaching acting and technical theater, in addition to directing and producing student productions, since 1979, in institutions ranging from MIT's High School Studies Program to the Actor's Workshop to the Voyagers Homeschool Cooperative to the Bedford (MA) and Brookline (MA) Public Schools. My work has been at all grade levels, from 1st grade werewolves through college kings and clowns. In the last few years, I have designed and taught a directing class, then produced 4 one-act plays for my students; co-wrote and directed a full length production with 18 performers, distributed across ages 5 to 19; and assistant directed a middle school musical production, providing specific instruction in character presentation and cackling.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a public school elementary teacher in two different school systems as well as one private school. My work includes math, theater, English, history, and science. In addition, I've served as a tutor for numerous elementary school students. At my first public elementary school placement, my principal- who had hired me for my ability with gifted students - expressed great surprise at seeing how well I worked with the struggling students and asked me why that would be. "I teach people, not subjects," I replied. The goal is always to meet the student where she or he is, whether in a classroom or working one-to-one.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I have been teaching study skills and related theory to parents, students, and other teachers for more than 20 years, including places like the MIT Educational Studies Program. I work with families or just students, depending on the situation, to determine what the need of a particular student/dynamic is and then endeavor to enable to student to implement it. This includes their learning when and how to ask for support and what their strengths and weaknesses are. References are available.

College Counseling

I have been providing college counseling since my time as headmaster of a small private 7th - 12th grade high school in Boston. I have assisted students in determining to which schools they would with to apply; helped home schooling students/families with both pre-college planning and transcript & portfolio preparation; and provided recommendations to numerous students. I've helped students get into the colleges of their choice as late as mid-August for a September start and I have a strong familiarity with both the alternative and traditional college/university options, including many overseas options.

Chess

Chess

I am a high "Class A" tournament chess player who has taught chess in public and private schools, as well as on a tutorial basis for more than 30 years. One of my former students is now a Grandmaster (FIDE) and has competed for the world championship (though I suspect he just might have gotten there without my teaching ;-) ). I can work effectively with 95% of chess students, up to my own level and, depending on the need, a bit beyond for some.
