About Nancy

After 18 years of full-time teaching at the middle school level, I have entered into an early retirement where I work part-time in a private school teaching math at the seventh and eighth grade level. I enjoy helping students of all ability levels gain confidence in their ability to comprehend math concepts. As a middle school generalist who taught content reading and history in addition to middle school math and algebra, I draw on a broad background to provide the necessary support to help students to develop a working mathematical vocabulary and concrete visualization of abstract mathematical expressions. Tutoring individual students at this point in my career brings me great joy.

Currently, I provide individual tutoring to middle and high school students through the algebra 2 level in addition to adults returning to the college level in need of algebra review. My students can access a wide range of resources that I accumulated during my full-time teaching years. Many students need to work with manipulatives and visual representations of concepts to fully grasp the big ideas in mathematics. If a student needs help using a graphing calculator, I can provide clear step-by-step instructions. In addition to my past experience, I stay current in my profession by reading current teaching articles, discussing teaching subjects with colleagues and maintaining my membership to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Sewing

At 60, i have accumulated a lifetime of experience sewing clothing, crafts and home decor items. I can also upholster. Currently, I teach sewing in my school where students are taught basic hand stitches, how to layout and cut fabric, and how to handle a sewing machine and iron.

Social Studies

As a Massachusetts certified teacher, I was required to complete the equivalence of a liberal arts degree in addition to my business degree. I accomplished this by combining my history minor with additional course work in the social sciences completed in a post baccalaureate program at Westfield State University. Additional social studies graduate coursework was completed at Clark University. I taught 7th grade world history.
