About Michael

I am a teacher at heart and have experience teaching in a classroom, small groups, and one-on-one. I have tutored high school students in English and taught English, Journalism, and History to a group. While I was overseas, I tutored high school students in English as a Foreign Language. I have worked as a pastor, a journalist, and served in the United States Army.

I have passed the Massachusetts State Teacher Certification Examination in Secondary Education and my GPA for the second Master's Degree was 3.78 on a four-point scale. The first Master's was completed with a 3.29 on a four-point scale. I have gotten better as I've gotten older.

While doing my undergraduate work, I served as a classroom aide in a Middle School and tutored some Junior High School students in English as well. I have traveled around to several countries and studied several foreign languages. As I studied these other languages, my understanding of English grammar increased. This is experience I can pass along to you.

My teaching philosophy for tutoring is the same as my philosophy in the classroom. The best way to further any student's education is to facilitate the student, at whatever age, to wrestle-with and encounter the material. This objective is best achieved through the inductive method, or if you will, the Socratic Method. That's continuing to ask relevant questions about content and interpretation.

In tutoring, it might work like this: Instead of you being passive and just listening to me talk, I would say to the student, 'Here's a sentence. There is a subject, the verb, and the adjectival modifiers. However, we have a problem, they don't agree. Let's look at the sentence and see what needs to be changed and why.' This method engages the mind and involves the student in the learning process.

It would be the same with American History. Instead of just telling the student, 'The original 13 states had a Constitutional Convention in September 1787 to replace the Articles of Confederation. The war was long over and the U.S. had achieved independence. However, the Articles of Confederation weren't working. Something had to be done.' The better way is to give that statement and follow it with, 'Why didn't the Articles of Confederation work? What was missing?' The pair of questions would get the student involved and increase their understanding.

The more the student understands, the more his or her mind grows. That puts the student on the pathway to success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have sixteen years of pastoral teaching experience in which I have preached sermons and led small groups using the inductive teaching method.

I have also taught Bible and theology to a class in an adult education program.

I have been privileged to earn two Master's Degrees in Biblical, education, and cross-cultural specialties.

English

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies Education, which included tutoring experience, and courses in advanced grammar and advanced writing.

Furthermore, I have two Master's Degrees in which writing essays and research papers was a major part of the course work.

Then there's the 17 years of journalism experience.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught English in an ESL school and taught English grammar in a classroom setting. I also tutored an elementary school student in English while studying education in college.
