About James

Hi everyone, and thanks for taking some time to read this far. I'm a recent graduate from UMass Lowell and completed my Bachelor's degree in English in December 2014. In pursuing this degree, my primary area of concentration was creative writing, but my coursework also included literature, language and grammar as well as psychology which is my minor. While my math coursework was minimal in college, I was a math enthusiast all through middle school and high school, so I can also offer help in areas such as algebra and geometry.

I decided to get into tutoring because I am extremely passionate about the material I've studied and the potential to help other students in mastering it. I understand firsthand what it is like to struggle with an academic workload and be willing to do anything to improve, and I am excited to offer my services to any students or parents who are looking to see improvement in school performance. I am more than happy to offer support in the completion of any academic writing assignments, and can assist in any parts of the process including brainstorming, organization, introductions, paragraph transitions, conclusions, proper evidence citations, grammar, structure, editing and proofreading.

As a tutor, I am happy to travel up to 40 miles to work with a student. I am very flexible, and a bit of travel is not a problem. I have a cancellation policy that is not too strict, the minimum amount of notice that must be given is one hour. This is because I understand that issues can arise at the last minute, and if a student needs to cancel I do my best to work with him or her in arranging some makeup time. I also offer a free consultation meeting for students & parents who wish to get acquainted in person before making a commitment.

As far as my methods, I put a great amount of thought into assessing each individual student's needs in the beginning of our work together, and I can then cater specifically to how I can help that person with their particular area of struggles. For example, in tutoring literature/reading, I can ask the student to read specific passages, after which I can offer key discussion questions and take the student through a practice quiz/exam.

An important part of lessons in reading is identifying key concepts of a work that are important to the overall context and on which the student may be tested in school. I aim for these tutoring sessions to feel like a casual and conversational discussion of what the student has read, when in fact all key themes, literary devices and potential exam/essay topics will be covered. In addition, I periodically offer thorough progress reports that detail the results of given lessons and chronicle the student's performance.

Thank you for considering me for the chance to help and I look forward to possibly working together!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a recent UMass Lowell graduate, and in December 2014 I completed my B.A. in English with a specialty in creative writing and additional course credits in literature. As required by my university, I proved my proficiency in grammar, reading and composition in placement tests and introductory coursework (College Writing I and II) before attaining status as an English major. Throughout my academic career I heavily studied writing and literature. I am very experienced in maintaining high standards as relating to grammar, comprehensive reading proficiency, analytical skills and writing ability. I am in touch with what success in English requires, and I look forward to working with you!

Writing

I am a recent UMass Lowell graduate, and in December 2014 I completed my B.A. in English with a specialty in creative writing. My relevant coursework included Intro to Creative Writing, Essay Writing, Creative Writing: Fiction I and II, Creative Writing: Poetry and Personal & Reflective Writing. During a session, I work with the student to discuss his or her individual areas of need. From there, I can help the student to master the writing process - including everything from developing an engaging introductory paragraph to bringing an entire writing assignment full circle. I can also offer different proofreading techniques as well as assistance with proper citations of textual evidence. Thank you for considering me, and I look forward to working with you!
