About Joe

I'm a lucky guy - I've always loved reading and writing, and I've used my skills in both to achieve success in more than one career area. I majored in English as a college student even though I had always had a great interest in sciences, especially biology.

Little did I know how much I would love my months student teaching high school English and working with adolescents to develop their reading and writing skills. Sadly, for me, there just weren't many Massachusetts job openings for teaching high school English in the year I graduated. Luckily, for me, I used my skills in reading and writing to show how valuable I was and to open doors to other career paths. First, I was hired by a computer graphics company to run two departments for them. After gaining computer skills in that position, I was able to add in my biology interests and applied for a job coordinating research projects at a major Boston medical school. While in that position I was co-author of a research study actually published in an international medical journal. I then decided to go back to school, achieved my master's degree in nursing and became a nurse practitioner. Every step of the way, I've used my skills in reading and writing to meet all kinds of challenges. As a nurse practitioner, I must also depend on my ability to teach my patients and their families to help them deal with many health challenges. But I must say, I miss teaching English. I miss helping students realize that they don't have to 'love' reading and writing to improve their skills and succeed in reading and writing.

Right now I have some time available to spend as a tutor. That's why I'm writing these paragraphs for you to read. If you find that your reading and writing skills haven't helped you achieve the grades you need to succeed in school, maybe you simply need the right help. Let's use your school assignments as the basis for our work. Let's make sure you are able to identify what it is that you are being asked to do in your assignments. Understanding a question should help you begin your answer and plan your approach. I will give you mini-assignments as part of each lesson to address specific areas in which you simply need more practice to develop your skills. I will always be open to your suggestions about skills you feel you need my help to improve. I will also provide you and your parent(s) with a summary of what we covered in each lesson and updates on your progress. I want you to gain confidence in your abilities and to build that confidence by repeated success in your lessons and completion of your school assignments. I appreciate feedback from you and your parent(s) at any time. I will not charge for a lesson with which you or your parent(s) don't feel completely satisfied. Prior to starting a series of lessons, I suggest we meet for a free half-hour consultation visit to discuss overall goals and responsibilities.
I certainly understand that urgent issues arise that may necessitate the cancellation of a lesson; I prefer a 12-hour notice minimum for cancellations. I do not provide a meeting space for the lessons. I am willing to provide these lessons in your home or to meet you at a public space such as a library or cafe/coffee shop (as long as low-level talking is allowed). I cannot provide transportation for students to or from such public spaces.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you develop reading and writing skills that will increase your success in school and beyond!

I received a National Merit Scholarship, Commended Student status. I attended UMASS Amherst graduating with BA in English and Massachusetts Secondary School English teaching certification (expired). I am a published author in medical journal STROKE. I have taught/lectured in numerous medical/nursing settings from coast-to-coast from small in-services to audiences of 400+. I also achieved clinical instructor status/appointment within Boston University School of Medicine.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
