As an elementary school teacher I recognize the importance of making learning interesting and fun. I try to incorporate interactive lessons into daily learning while giving students a variety of strategies to choose from. Students have many different styles and rates of learning, also, so I take care to adapt my teaching style to individual learners.
I am currently teaching third grade, but have experience teaching second, fourth and fifth as well. As an elementary school teacher I have the privilege of exploring topics in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. I am especially interested in writing, with emphasis on grammar, mechanics, details and description. In the classroom we address various forms of writing, including narrative, expository, persuasive and poetry. I have also spent a great deal of time helping students prepare for MCAS testing, and am now also addressing and preparing students to take the PARCC test. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an employee of the Beverly school system, I have participated in many discussions and professional development opportunities aimed at understanding and aligning instruction with the common core standards. We have been especially diligent in our efforts to create math lessons that align with the common core. In addition, we, as a staff, have explored the PARCC website and practiced taking the tests as a way of better understanding the expectations of our students. We are working to prepare students by exposing them to important information and providing various strategies for understanding and answering questions.
I am a certified in elementary education for 1-6. My graduate degree is from Salem State College.
