About Andrew

Hi! I'm Andy, and I'm here to help you excel at Math & Science! I graduated with a Master's and Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from RPI in 2013 and I've been tutoring for almost half my life.

I've always excelled at Math and Science, and ever since High School and through college I've been helping my friends and classmates get better grades. My mother is a retired High School AP Physics teacher, so I guess I've just sort of inherited her penchant for teaching. I was a National Merit Commended Scholar, recipient of the RPI Math & Science Award, and I was the top ranked 'Mathlete' in the state of Connecticut my senior year of High School. In college I made the Dean's List every year and graduated Cum Laude. I started tutoring students in Math and Physics through National Honor Society and through Wyzant for the last two years, always with good results. Teaching has become a passion of mine. When I'm not tutoring my Wyzant students you can usually find me teaching SAT prep courses across several Boston Public Schools.

If you're worried about an engineer being your tutor because of our famed lack of personality and social skills you need not worry about that with me. I connect very well with people and am very extroverted.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I started Algebra when I was in 3rd grade and I've always had a knack for it. Whenever I tutor students in higher level Math the first thing I always gauge is their grasp of Algebra techniques. Therefore I would say that I have more experience tutoring Algebra than any of my other subjects.

Algebra 2

I started Algebra when I was in 3rd grade and I've always had a knack for it. I got A's all through school and algebra is a must know subject if you get a degree in engineering.

Calculus

I got an A+ in calculus in high school and a 5 on the BC Calculus AP Test. I have two degrees in engineering, and calculus is a must-know subject for that.

Differential Equations

I took Differential Equations at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and received an A in the course.

Economics

I took Micro and Macro Economics in High School and got an A in both and a 4 and a 5 on the AP tests respectively. I also took several economics courses in college, getting at least an A- in all of them.

Elementary Math

I've been in advanced math programs ever since 3rd grade. I was on my high school math team in high school and was the top ranked senior in the state of Connecticut in 2007.

Elementary Science

I've always excelled at science. My senior year of high school I won the Rensselaer Medal which is given to the top Math & Science student in the school every year.

Geometry

I got an A+ in Geometry in high school.

Linear Algebra

I have taken many courses at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where linear algebra is key to understanding the concepts, such as Multivariable Calculus, Systems Analysis Techniques, Robotics and others. I have received stellar grades in all these classes.

Mechanical Engineering

I have a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. I had a 3.61 GPA undergraduate and a 3.76 GPA for my graduate work. I can provide a resume, diploma and transcript to prove both if needed.

Physics

I have a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from RPI. I was a Physics TA in college and have been tutoring Physics since I was a senior in high school. My mom is a retired AP Physics instructor so I guess teaching physics must run in the family.

Prealgebra

I started Algebra in 3rd grade. I always got A's in math throughout college and high school.

Precalculus

I got an A+ in pre-calc in high school. The teacher would even have me help him teach the class from time to time.

Probability

I took a standard engineering probability course (Modeling and Analysis of Uncertainty) in college and received a B+. I am very familiar with the subject.

SAT Math

I received an 800 on the Math SAT. Additionally, I have been trained in the new SAT and work with Boston Scholar Athletes to teach SAT Prep courses at public schools all over the Boston area.

SAT Reading

I have been trained in the new SAT and work with Boston Scholar Athletes to teach SAT Prep courses at public schools all over the Boston area.

SAT Writing

I have been trained in the new SAT and work with Boston Scholar Athletes to teach SAT Prep courses at public schools all over the Boston area.

Spelling

It's spelling. It's mostly memorization.

Trigonometry

I got an A+ in Trig in high school. I have a Master's of Mechanical Engineering and you can't get that without having a strong understanding of Trigonometry.

Wonderful tutor -- couldn't recommend him more highly! — Andy tutored my son for Honors Algebra II and Trigonometry (sophomore year of high school). Before we hired Andy, my son was having a very difficult time, both because of the difficulty level of the material, and the teacher's poor teaching skills (many other kids in the class were having similar problems). His grades were very low, and his confidence was shot. Andy did a great job helping my son ...
