Salem State College (MEd)
Hello! My name is Bonnie. Let me start by saying that Patience, Trust, Kindness, Compassion and Dependability are of the utmost importance to me as your tutor.
My Passion: To be able to reach out to your individual learning styles and needs and to see you smile at the moment that a difficult concept comes alive. This is the most fulfilling moment for me as a tutor! I am dedicated to, together with you, break down things that are complicated and overwhelming into simpler parts through strategies, and making them so clear that when we put all the pieces together, the material not only makes sense to you; but you now see them in a meaningful, relevant context. More importantly you are now armed and confident and able to connect and synthesize information that used to be perhaps confusing, boring or a complete disconnect, and is now, relevant and reachable.
Background: I am from Boston, MA originally. I have a Bachelors degree from Brandeis University, spent a semester studying abroad in Florence Italy, have a Masters in Education from Salem State College and am certified in both Elementary Education and Informational Technology Library Science. I taught 8th grade Technology for two years and 4th through 7th grade for another two years. Then, I taught two years of 4th/5th grade combined. Since college, I have been tutoring students of all ages and those for whom English is a second language in subjects all across the curriculum such as English, Social Studies, Math, Educational Technology, Internet Navigation, Research, Reading, Writing and Test Taking Preparation mostly at the elementary/ middle school levels. In my teaching and tutoring, I have spent time analyzing Assessment Exams and Teaching students how to tackle these challenging tests, instilling the skills using a variety of creative and fun techniques, methods, which they will utilize and through repetition, practice will enable them to tackle these challenges.
My passion for tutoring comes from a long-standing philosophy that I have embraced and brought into all my teaching and tutoring experiences: To make concepts and information come alive for each student by making it relevant to real life. By embracing your unique way of learning and your unique talents I hope to see you smile knowing you now have charge of your learning success.
Education is not one size fits all. For the learning experience to be meaningful, enjoyable, anxiety-free, I pride myself on first finding out how you best learn. You may be a visual learner, an auditory learner meaning they learn best by listening, a tactile learner who learns best with hands-on activities, and there are other styles. This will be the start of a tutoring experience that really works for you and that you look forward to!
You deserve success and to know that you can create that success. My privilege is to facilitate that and to have you leave a tutoring session feeling as though new parts of your brain have been awakened, which I assure you is a great sign! You will leave each session with a sense of accomplishment feeling like you have worked hard because success takes hard work! But every time you will leave with increased self-esteem, self-confidence and independence, motivated to practice, to tackle your next task.
One of the major reasons I became an educator is because I can relate to students because of my own experiences in the classroom. Back then, many of my teachers just lectured and did not present material in the learning style that worked best for me, which left me frustrated and made it so hard to comprehend and synthesize the material that I wanted to come alive for me.
It will be my pleasure to work with you and to have your tutoring session be something you look forward to. It will be a very rewarding and refreshing experience for you. I use all kinds of tools based on how you learn. Be prepared for every moment of the session to be set up for you to be successful. Example, if you are a visual learner, I may bring in props and pictures that make fractions come alive. Be prepared to be put into real life situations such as shopping at Macys during a sale in order to understand difficult concepts.
So look forward to lots of fun, hard work and success!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have a Master's degree in Education from Salem State College and am certified in both Elementary Education and Informational Technology Library Science. As an elementary school teacher, I modeled study skills and learning strategies on a daily basis and spent time after school working with students as well on what study skills worked for their individual learning styles. Bringing curriculum to life Means putting it in a meaningful context - which means relating it to the unique way each student learns. As an educator and tutor developing strategies with students that would enhance their comprehension of skills is something I love doing.
