About Olia

Bio

I completed a Masters degree in Computer Science that involved many math courses, which I found most intriguing. Throughout my studies I've helped many classmates with the material. Back in high school I was a tutor for grade 9 math students. I really enjoyed working as a teacher's assistant during my graduate studies. Currently I'm assisting second graders with their math challenges.

Math is not about memorization, it's about understanding. First, it's important for students to understand what they're asked to solve. Then they need to identify what is challenging to them in the given problem. Next step is to divide and conquer - what smaller/similar problem they know how to solve, solve that (possibly using neat tricks), and then generalize to solve what they've been asked in the first place. This approach digs deeper into what gaps in the mathematical foundation the student has. Then it's a matter of fixing the gaps that likely sap the student's confidence in the subject, and restore the joy of little mathematical challenges. Math is a game. Math is fun. Anyone can do it given right tools and a solid base. I provide students with nifty tricks and an approach to break down problems into small manageable pieces.

My field of expertise is in mathematics of grade 1-12, and first year university. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions or would like to schedule a lesson.
