About Jonathan

I completed a degree in Physics from Yale University, and offer a number of years of experience as a teacher and tutor. I am also a freelance writer, and in general am as passionate about the humanities as I am about math and science.

For the past two years, I've worked with one of the leading in-home tutoring groups in the area, helping students prepare for the SAT, ACT, SSAT, as well as various subject and Advanced Placement tests. I also worked regularly with students as an academic and writing tutor.

I feel my key strengths are my ability to clarify difficult concepts in an articulate manner, my ability to engage and motivate students, and my ability to instill confidence by developing academic and test strategies that are optimum for an individual student.

Another way I work with students is as a ski coach. What I love about tutoring is similar to what I love about coaching--helping students improve their performance.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I worked for 2 years with one of the leading in-home tutoring groups in the area, helping students prepare for the SAT, ACT, as well as Math and Science subject tests.

ACT Science

I worked for 2 years with one of the leading in-home tutoring groups in the area, helping students prepare for the SAT, ACT, as well as Math and Science subject tests. I've had particular success with improving scores on the Science section of the ACT as the skills required involve those of both critical reading and understanding of the scientific method.

Algebra 1

I spent five years tutoring Algebra at a Charter School in Boston, and have had a number of WyzAnt students during the past year a half. My strength in this subject is my ability to describe various problem-solving strategies in a way that makes sense. I also excel at helping students find specific strategies and techniques they feel most comfortable with.

Algebra 2

I spent five years' experience tutoring algebra and precalculus at a charter school in Boston, and have had a number of WyzAnt students during the past year a half. My strength in this subject is my ability to describe various problem-solving strategies in a way that makes sense. I also excel at helping students find specific strategies and techniques they feel most comfortable with.

Chemistry

I have taught chemistry to a number of students in the past few years. I've found that students often have many of the skills needed to apply general chemical principles to problems and exams, but just need help in seeing how the principles apply in different situations.

Discrete Math

I tutored students at the Middle School and High School levels in this subject, both at a charter school and with an in-home tutoring company that does test preparation along with academic tutoring. I completed a degree in Physics from Yale University, and offer a number of years of experience as a teacher and tutor.

Economics

I work in management consulting and have taken a number of post-graduate economics courses. I have also trained new associates in basic economics.

Literature

In addition to completing the literature requirements at college, I've taken a number of post-graduate courses at The Harvard Extension School. I've gained tutoring experience by helping a number of students with high school and college level literature courses (which included assistance with essay writing), as well the Literature SAT subject test.

Physics

I received a degree in Physics from Yale University and tutored other students in the subject during college. I've continued tutoring, in both physics and math, in volunteer settings since then.

Students I've worked with have ranged from those taking introductory courses to those preparing for the AP Physics C tests. I also taught an accelerated AP Physics course this past summer.

Precalculus

I spent five years' experience tutoring algebra and precalculus at a charter school in Boston, and have had a number of WyzAnt students during the past year a half. My strength in this subject is my ability to describe various problem-solving strategies in a way that makes sense. I also excel at helping students find specific strategies and techniques they feel most comfortable with.

SAT Math

I worked for 2 years with one of the leading in-home tutoring groups in the area, helping students prepare for the SAT, ACT, as well as Math and Science subject and AP tests. I've also gone through a training course on the redesigned SAT.

SAT Reading

I worked for two years with the leading in-home tutoring group in the area. I've had success with helping students learn active reading techniques to bring a more critical approach to their reading and improve their speed during standardized tests.

SAT Writing

In helping prepare students for the SAT writing section, I focus on teaching students the essential grammar rules as well as the key characteristics of a well-structured, high-scoring essay. For grammar, the key skill is being able to know when one can rely on “hearing” an error versus when it’s necessary to be more analytical. For the essay, the key skill is being able to quickly develop compelling examples (partly through brainstorming before the test) which support a clear argument.

SSAT

Over the past two years, I've helped a number of students successfully prepare for both the SSAT and ISEE exams. I've found that preparing for these exams helps student internalize and enhance core academic skills such as critical reading and mathematical reasoning. I offer an ability to explain problem-solving techniques in a way that makes sense for students in this age range.

Statistics

I've taught a summer AP class in statistics. I feel particularly adept at teaching this subject because it straddles quantitative and qualitative approaches. This seems to throw off many student, but I find that once they get the hang of "telling a story with numbers" they flourish.

Writing

I work partly as a free-lance writer. I've worked with students helping them to develop college essays as well as helping them to prepare for the ACT and SAT writing sections.
