I completed a degree in Physics from Yale University, and offer a number of years of experience as a teacher and tutor. I am also a freelance writer and consider myself as capable in the humanities (reading and writing skills) as in math and science.

For the past four years, I've worked with one of the leading in-home tutoring groups in the area, helping students prepare for the SAT, ACT, SSAT, as well as various subject and Advanced Placement tests. I also worked regularly with students as an academic and writing tutor.

I feel my key strengths are my ability to clarify difficult concepts in an articulate manner, my ability to engage and motivate students, and my ability to instill confidence by developing academic and test strategies that are optimum for an individual student.

Another way I work with students is as a ski coach. What I love about tutoring is similar to what I love about coaching--helping students improve their performance.

English

English,

English

I began working with ESL students through responding to requests from parents of a few of my students. I enjoy helping people learn English and have had excellent results with Mandarin and Hindi speakers. The key tools I use include the "Side by Side" books, "ESL Grammar," and a mirror for pronunciation practice.
Literature,

Literature

In addition to completing the literature requirements at college, I've taken a number of post-graduate courses at The Harvard Extension School. I've gained tutoring experience by helping a number of students with high school and college level literature courses (which included assistance with essay writing), as well the Literature SAT subject test.
SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

I've found the key skill needed to do well on the (new) SAT reading section is the ability to be flexible in interpreting the passages. This allows a student to spot incorrect answers that may initially be appealing but that are inconsistent with some element of the text (or that are simply not justified by the text). I think the new SAT is a clear improvement over the old test and preparing for it helps students raise their reading skills to a level they'll need for college.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

In helping prepare students for the SAT writing section, I focus on teaching students the essential grammar rules as well as the key characteristics of a well-structured, high-scoring essay. For grammar, the key skill is being able to know when one can rely on “hearing” an error versus when it’s necessary to be more analytical. For the essay, the key skill has now become the ability to carefully analyze a document and show how different rhetorical elements interact to achieve (or fail to achieve) the author's intent.

I spent five years tutoring Algebra at a Charter School in Boston, and have had a number of WyzAnt students during the past year a half. My strength in this subject is my ability to describe various problem-solving strategies in a way that makes sense. I also excel at helping students find specific strategies and techniques they feel most comfortable with.

I also excel at helping students find specific strategies and techniques they feel most comfortable with.

Another excellent sesson

Jon consistently explains Statistics in a very understandable way. I only wish my High School teachers were this good. Thanks, Jon!

J, 2 lessons with Jonathan

Very patient and caring

My son really likes Jon. He feels comfortable with him. Jon explains things so that my son understands them. Jon has a great sense of humor, too :)! Anyone can benefit from his great knowlege, patience and teaching style.

First session very successful!

Jonathan came for a two hour session to prepare my daughter for her upcoming ACT. She told me she learned a great deal and he was very easy to work with. Looking forward to the next session!

A great choice

I chose Jonathan to work with my 8th grade son, who is preparing for an upcoming SSAT. Equipped with experience, patience, and plenty of source material, Jonathan has helped my son immensely. They have worked on both strategy and content, covering all aspects of the test. Jonathan's explanations are clear and helpful. He has a good sense of my son's strengths and weaknesses and is helping my son move forward through thoughtful homework assignments and a careful review of all missed questions. My son enjoys working with Jonathan and knows that his efforts will pay off with better test scores this fall.

Rebecca, 15 lessons with Jonathan

Jon is a truly 5 star tutor. He can help any kid that needs help. Make them encouraged and realize the potential.

always reliable

John is an excellent tutor. he has helped my son tremendously in AP Physics. In addition to his teaching, he is always on time, responsive and very flexible.

Mary Beth, 14 lessons with Jonathan

Knowledgeable, helpful, responsive

Jonathan is current on all of the study guides out right now for the ACT and the new SAT. He is quick to analyze problem areas and knows how to advise what study methods can help. He is motivating and keeps in close contact with parents and students. Very pleased with my daughter's progress so far.

Cindy, 5 lessons with Jonathan

Excellent Tutor

I have tried to review Jon a few times and believe it came as a 4 due to my error. I would rate him as a 5 and feel he has a great connection with our son. Our son always wants to go to his sessions with Jon. Jon does a nice job of giving him things to do before the next lesson and also always sends us a review of what they did. We think Jon is very invested in helping our son. We think he is worth every penny:)
