About Zach

I am a recent graduate of the Master of Performance program at the Royal College of Music in London. Having a vested interest in how the arts, in-depth research, and interpersonal interaction can advance the human condition, I strive to use music to foster cultural understanding and new perspectives between communities. My teaching style is holistic; I work with students to help them develop not only as saxophonists, but as well-rounded musicians.

As a performer and teacher, I enjoy exploring the diverse solo, chamber, and large ensemble repertoire for the saxophone family, with a particular focus on the baritone and alto saxophones. As a soloist and chamber musician performing with the Dusk Duo and award-winning Oracle Saxophone Quartet, I have appeared at London's Royal Albert Hall, the Pride of Britain Awards, the Cadogan Hall foyer, a concerto appearance with the Royal College of Music wind orchestra, several engagements in Catalonia, as well as at festivals in Denmark and Finland.

I have been extensively trained at the highest level in performance, ear training, dictation, sight singing, music theory, general Western music history (with particular focus on 20th century music). I look forward to encouraging the growth of my students in these areas as they develop.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I had two years of conservatory-intensive ear-training, during which time I was frequently assessed in my abilities. I have solid basic piano skills to be able to teach interval and linear-based ear training.

General Music

I have six years of advanced conservatory study, leading to two professional qualifications. I am an active soloist, chamber, and large ensemble musician, as well as recording artist.

Music History

I have had several years of conservatory-based education in general Western music history, as well as in-depth study of classical music after 1900. My own performance and work as a saxophonist and artist manager has demanded that I am constantly researching and relaying information about composers, compositional styles, and major trends in the classical music world.

Music Theory

Bachelor of Music (including three years' intensive theory) - Boston University
Master of Performance - Royal College of Music, London

Saxophone

I hold a Master of Performance degree from the Royal College of Music in London, England, one of the top conservatories in the world. I also have earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Boston University School of Music. I have extensive experience as a chamber musician, recording artist, large ensemble musician, and soloist.
