About Talia

Hi! My name is Talia, and I am an 8th Grade Special Education teacher! I've previously taught General Ed. Kindergarten, Special Education K-5, Autism, and now 8th grade! I thoroughly enjoy teaching - it is my passion, and I genuinely find an interest in learning WITH my students! Every day is a new opportunity for knowledge. I have BA in Early Childhood Education and Special Education K-12, and I'm currently working towards my Master's (MEd.) in Moderate Special Education K-8. I'm bilingual, my primary language being English and my secondary language Italian. My family came here from Naples, Italy about 35 years ago!

I've worked as a tutor before at Southern New Hampshire University while I was an Undergrad. i tutored English there (English is my favorite subject to learn and teach!) and specialized in executive functioning skills for English and English Language Learners (ELL). My experience (and absolute love) with early childhood ages, moderate - severe special needs, middle school, and college-level students have given me the skills necessary to see great success in academics, socialization, and executive functioning within my students!

My overall goal with tutoring and teaching is to challenge my students while maintaining a calm atmosphere where they feel their learning is at its best. If you're looking for someone who is passionate about learning and seeing progress, I am positive I can be a contribution to yours and/or your child's success!

I speak Italian fluently with my entire family. I was tutored in Italian on Saturdays growing up, so I have been provided with an Italian education on top of my regular education. I also took Honors Italian all through high school, where I learned the skills necessary to teach it. In college, I tutored ELL students, some of which were Italian. I've been very fortunate to have been given the skills necessary to be a successful Italian speaker and reader.

I graduated from high school with a concentration in Child Development, and then went on to pursue my education degree from SNHU. I have a dual BA in Early Childhood Education and Special Education K-12. During my time as an Undergraduate, I student taught Kindergarten as well as Special Education (I split my student teaching in half). After graduation, I was offered a job in that same school to teach Kindergarten. Halfway through the year, I transferred into the Special Education department. I've had a range of experience in elementary school settings and content areas, and I'm a certified teacher (preK-3 - General) (K-12 Special Ed.).

I currently work as an 8th Grade Special Education teacher! I have an absolute passion for special education, at it is near and dear to my heart. My brother has Asperger's, so I grew up knowing and learning about the disorder and how to teach children with it. I've also worked as a 1:1 teacher for Autism (moderate-severe). I'm currently working towards my MEd in Moderate Special Education K-8. Some of the disabilities I have experience with are: dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD/ADD, Autism, Asperger's, social emotional, Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD), Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

I'd love to get to know more about you, and have the wonderful opportunity of being your tutor! I am so thrilled to be doing the work I do and I know that I can certainly make a positive increase in yours or your child's academic life! Please contact me with any questions and/or requests!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

Along with Aspergers, my brother also has ADHD, so I was raised in a home where ADHD was the basis of how we had to schedule our days and the norms we had in our home. I am a Special Education teacher, and more than half of my caseload not only has ADHD, but other disabilities paired with it as well. I have training in behavioral management of students with such disorders, and have the skills needed to get a student to focus at tasks at hand for short periods of time.

Aspergers

My brother has Aspergers syndrome, and you cannot fully understand the disability and what it entails until you have dealt with it first hand. Not only did I grow up with someone with Aspergers, but I also taught 1:1 Autism, the majority of my caseload with Asperger's. I am a certified Special Education teacher, K-12.

Elementary (K-6th)

As an undergraduate student, I majored in Early Childhood and Special Education K-12. During my experience as a working teacher, I have not only taught Kindergarten and Special Education K-5, but I also am an 8th grade teacher right now. Next year, I will be joining a founding team for an Elementary school, where I will be a classroom teacher for either a Kindergarten, First, or Second grade classroom.

Phonics

I have extensive training in Wilson Reading and Orton Gillingham, both of which provide Phonics and Phonemic Awareness instruction. As a Kindergarten teacher, I participated in a program through Wilson that was targeted around Phonics instruction - more than half of my day was doing just that. I also am a certified examiner for Phonics exams, and have been proctoring them as a Special Education teacher this year.
