About Amy

I am a highly motivated, dedicated, enthusiastic and experienced teacher who has nearly ten years of experience teaching students at various levels and abilities in an urban community. I am extremely qualified to tutor students of all ages; I have a love of learning and literature and find no greater pleasure than helping students ignite that same passion within themselves. I hold my students to high standards, while at the same time, I strive to make sure that all of my students feel safe and comfortable, therefore creating the perfect environment for students to push themselves further than they thought possible. I work extremely hard to become well acquainted with my students and their abilities, which, I have found, has been the key to my success as an educator.

Having been the leader of the English Department for three years, I am highly knowledgeable about my discipline and the trends in education. As the lead teacher, I helped to create the Year Long Plans for both ELA 9 and ELA 12 classes that were aligned to the Common Core State Standards. Furthermore, I developed the curriculum for two classes, a Composition I class and a Shakespeare elective entitled Shakespeare Alive!, both which I taught. I also took part in the creation of department-wide rubrics for narrative, research, and textual analysis writing assignments with the aid of Envision Learning Partners and Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, & Equity (SCALE). I also have seven years of tutoring experience at the high school where I recently taught for nearly a decade. The program was called Homework Help which involved teachers staying after school for an hour and a half to essentially tutor students in a variety of subjects. We would help with homework assignments, projects, writing and reading assignments, college essays, SAT prep and registration, etc. For the last five out of those seven years I ran the program since the former supervisor was stepping down; I knew just how valuable the program and did not wish to see it close.

I am extremely qualified to be a tutor because of my years of experience teaching English, my years of experience as head of the English department, and the hundreds of students that I have had the pleasure of teaching who truly loved my class and could vouch for my teaching skills.

I am very much looking forward to meeting and working with my new students! Please feel free to contact me at your convenience so that I can learn about how I can best help you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Literature

I have taught literature at the high school level for the past nine years at a school outside of Boston. During that time I taught a number of different literary genres such as British literature ( Shakespeare, "Lord of the Flies", "Brave New World"), American literature ("The Great Gatsby", "To Kill a Mockingbird"), poetry, short stories, and rhetoric. In addition to English classes I also taught a Shakespeare elective as well. For seven years I also tutored students after school at a program called Homework Help where I worked with high school students and would help them with any literature assignments they may have had.

Reading

I have taught English at the high school level for the past nine years at a school outside of Boston. During that time I taught my students a number of successful reading strategies to help them not only in their English classes, but in all their academic classes. For seven years I also tutored students after school at a program called Homework Help where I worked with high school students and would help them in a number of subjects (though English was my specialty) with a variety of homework assignments, writing and reading assignments, organization and study skills, etc.

Writing

I have taught English at the high school level for the past nine years at a school outside of Boston and therefore am extremely comfortable teaching and tutoring students with any writing assignment they may have. Additionally, I also taught a Composition class to freshmen at my school. I can easily help students with expository, narrative, research, descriptive, persuasive, and rhetorical writing assignments.
