Bio

I am a former computer/electrical engineer who became a mathematics professor because I enjoy teaching and studying mathematics so much. I have taught and tutored students at all levels, from remedial to international competition preparation.

I earned a B.E. (summa cum laude) and M.S. in Elec/Comp Eng from Georgia Tech, then worked in chip design and as a programmer for several years, before coming back to the true source of my professional joy: mathematics. I earned a B.S. at the U. of...

I earned a B.S. at the U. of Minnesota, an M.A. at the U. of Montana, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Rochester.

I was awarded a prestigious three-year teaching position at the University of Chicago, where I provided highly-rated teaching in ambitious courses. I also was the coach of the U's team at the International Mathematics Competition in 2015 and 2016, resulting in a 4th place finish out of 72 teams in 2016.

I took a permanent position at a Liberal Arts University in New England upon completing my term at the U. of Chicago. I teach Mathematics as well as Computer Science at this job, and continue to train students for math competitions.

My goal as a tutor is to help students understand the "big picture" of mathematics --- how to start from given premises and logically work one's way to a solution. It is more than just numbers; it is a way of thinking that is helpful in all facets of life. When you get the method of thinking down, all future courses and challenges in life become much easier. And this is what it is really about: education is not just about mastering individual subjects; instead, it is about learning how to learn, so that when you are out of the stage of life of formal education, you may still be a learner.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Whether we end up forming a tutoring relationship or not, my goal is to help people reach their mathematical potential.

* I also do Math and CS consulting work, helping people with grad school prep and applications. Please inquire if interested! *

Computer Engineering,

Computer Engineering

I earned an M.S. in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Georgia Tech, specializing in VLSI systems. I worked as a digital designer working on chips for cell phones for several years, and also as a full-stack programmer for several years. My specialties in this field are in digital logic and circuit optimization.
MATLAB,

MATLAB

I have used MATLAB off and on for 25 years. I used it in my capacity as a student of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech, and I have also used it for personal simulations and audio analysis. I also write documentation for MATLAB in the Audio, Video, Images, and Scientific Data area.

Calculus,

Calculus

I have been teaching Calculus in one form or another for more than twenty years. It was the first subject that captured my imagination so much that made me want to be a mathematician. I try to bring the joy that I experienced when I learned the subject to the students whom I teach, so that they can appreciate it and begin to learn it independently as well.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

Differential Equations is the branch of Calculus where all of the theory and techniques truly come alive. I did my PhD research in the field of Partial Differential Equations, and taught Ordinary Differential Equations, with and without Linear Algebra, several times as a graduate student. I know the material very well, both as a student of it and as a teacher of it, and enjoy tutoring this class more than any other. Please check my reviews and experience the difference I can make for you!
Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester. I have taught "Discrete Structures" and "Discrete Mathematics" numerous times at the University level. I also tutored people in the analogous course --- "Transition to Higher Mathematics" --- at the University of Rochester as a graduate student. This is one of my favorite subjects to teach and tutor.
Electrical Engineering,

Electrical Engineering

I earned a Bachelor's in Computer Engineering as well as an M.S. in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Georgia Tech. I also worked in the chip-design industry for several years after that. Additionally, I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics and have worked as a professor of mathematics at several universities.
Finite Math,

Finite Math

I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester. I taught/assisted teaching a total of ten Finite Mathematics sections at the University of Montana as a graduate teaching assistant. I wrote and graded quizzes, held office hours, and generally did everything I could to help students of various backgrounds succeed in the course.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I taught Linear Algebra with Differential Equations as a graduate student at the University of Rochester. I also taught Abstract Linear Algebra two times at the University of Chicago. I enjoy tutoring this subject because its applications are so broad, and I get to meet and work with students of so many different backgrounds with it.
Logic,

Logic

I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester. I teach "Discrete Structures" at Assumption University often, which contains as part of the course an introduction to mathematical logic. I also have taught foundational courses, both as a graduate student and a professor, where logic and proofs are introduced from first principles. Some of these courses have been lecture style, and some have been Inquiry Based Learning, using more of a Socratic method of teaching. I am comfortable with all forms in order to help students learn this important material.

Probability,

Probability

I have taught Probability Theory numerous times at the University level. I truly enjoy tutoring this course that captures the imagination of so many students. I can work both at the theoretical level and at the practical level, according to the needs of the student.

Clear and knowledgable

My son came down with the flu and missed a weeks worth of lessons in Calc BC and needed an emergency catchup so he can complete his HW assignments. Matt was able to jump in quickly and teach my son the concepts he needed to know to complete his assignment. My son said Matt was very clear and concise. Thanks for saving the day!

Very knowledgeable and friendly

I am a senior Mathematics major in college and Matt has helped me in a variety of my courses. Specifically, I am taking Numerical Analysis and Abstract Algebra, and every problem I go to him with he is able to explain to me fully. If I don't understand something that was said he takes the time to explain it in a different way so that I do understand it. Overall, I have been able to understand my classes a lot more from working with him!

Knowledgeable and Amazing at Teaching

Matt is an awesome tutor! He not only does a great job at explaining concepts, but also gives great advice to how to approach problems but teaches in a low-stress environment. He is incredibly patient and understanding. Through Matt I have been able to achieve A in Calc 1 and Calc 2. He is incredibly knowledgeable of all math related concepts and doesn't skip a beat when asking upon material learned in class. I highly recommend Matt for any math needed help!

Expert, expert tutor

I booked a session with Matt because I was having some difficulty with my Calc III / Real Analysis homework. Matt had taken the time to look at the questions/proofs I needed help with beforehand so that we made the most of the session time. The hour was extremely productive and we got through all of my questions, and even some other ones from prior assignments. We were able to go quickly because Matt explained things so clearly. I have felt more confident in my class since the session. I would highly recommend Matt to anyone, especially college math students.

Excellent Tutor

Matt is working on AP Calculus BC with my daughter. He quickly determines what she needs help with the most. Organizes and presents the information in a way she can understand. Then follows up with a summary of the lesson.

Outstanding math tutor

My son has been working with Matt for several months now and Matt has made all the difference in my son's mastery of the concepts. Matt is reliable, personable, and very effective at explaining difficult materials. I cannot recommend him highly enough. My son even scheduled a session during his spring break because he enjoys working with Matt so much, which I think pretty much sums it up.
