Bio

I am a former computer/electrical engineer who became a mathematics professor because I enjoy teaching and studying mathematics so much. I have taught and tutored students at all levels, from remedial to international competition preparation.

I earned a B.E. (summa cum laude) and M.S. in Elec/Comp Eng from Georgia Tech, then worked in chip design and as a programmer for several years, before coming back to the true source of my professional joy: mathematics. I earned a B.S. at the U. of...

I earned a B.S. at the U. of Minnesota, an M.A. at the U. of Montana, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Rochester.

I was awarded a prestigious three-year teaching position at the University of Chicago, where I provided highly-rated teaching in ambitious courses. I also was the coach of the U's team at the International Mathematics Competition in 2015 and 2016, resulting in a 4th place finish out of 72 teams in 2016.

I took a permanent position at Assumption University upon completing my term at the U. of Chicago. I teach Mathematics as well as Computer Science at this job, and continue to train students for math competitions.

My goal as a tutor is to help students understand the "big picture" of mathematics --- how to start from given premises and logically work one's way to a solution. It is more than just numbers; it is a way of thinking that is helpful in all facets of life. When you get the method of thinking down, all future courses and challenges in life become much easier. And this is what it is really about: education is not just about mastering individual subjects; instead, it is about learning how to learn, so that when you are out of the stage of life of formal education, you may still be a learner.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Whether we end up forming a tutoring relationship or not, my goal is to help people reach their mathematical potential.

* I also do Math and CS consulting work, helping people with grad school prep and applications. Please inquire if interested! *

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester. I have taught "Discrete Structures", the course in Discrete Mathematics, at Assumption University, several times. I also tutored people in the analogous course --- Transition to Higher Mathematics --- at the University of Rochester as a graduate student. This is one of my favorite subjects to teach and tutor.
Finite Math,

Finite Math

I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester. I taught/assisted teaching a total of ten Finite Mathematics sections at the University of Montana as a graduate teaching assistant. I wrote and graded quizzes, held office hours, and generally did everything I could to help students of various backgrounds succeed in the course.
Logic,

Logic

I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester. I teach "Discrete Structures" at Assumption University often, which contains as part of the course an introduction to mathematical logic. I also have taught foundational courses, both as a graduate student and a professor, where logic and proofs are introduced from first principles. Some of these courses have been lecture style, and some have been Inquiry Based Learning, using more of a Socratic method of teaching. I am comfortable with all forms in order to help students learn this important material.

Matt is the best Geometry Proof Based tutor you will find on Wyzant

Very grateful for an amazing session with my son. He was energetic and put great interest and focus in teaching him. He explained steps in detail. Allowed my son to understand concepts he didn’t before. He also came prepared with knowledge about the book he is using for Geometry, which was a great help and wonderful to see that he did the research in advance. Money and time well spent. Recommend him highly!

Extremly knowledgable and able to explain complex topics with ease

Matt helped me a lot with combinatorics he made complex topics easy to understand! He helped me more in an hour than my professor could! I highly recommend him.

Knowledgeable and excellent tutor

Matt helped me learn the ins and outs of discrete math, or logic. I was pretty confused about certain aspects of this area, but he helped me understand every aspect that I had trouble with. His explanations are always very precise and he makes an effort to ensure I understood everything I needed to. Thanks a lot, Matt!

Incredible Tutor!

Matt has been helping me understand complex concepts in Discrete Math! I really appreciate his "side examples" when I am having trouble understanding something - for instance a little aside during a combinatorial proof or proof by induction. Matt helps me visualize these concepts like a wiz!
