As a life-long learner, I believe the role of an educator is to inspire curiosity and creativity. It is so important that our kids have people to support them in their education; it is just as crucial that kids strive to be independent and active in the pursuit of their education.

I emphasize with my students the need for trial and error. Sometimes that means seeing things a few times, from different perspectives, working backwards or inside out. We all learn differently, and that should be celebrated. I aim to help my students discover their learning styles so that we can effectively understand, analyze, and reflect upon complex problems. Ultimately, I view problem solving as a skill we all need in order to better communicate with one another.

For the past 6+ years I have been working full-time as a paraprofessional in my town's middle school and high school. I have worked with students in grades 7-12 in the mainstream and special education tutorial classrooms. My students have a wide array of learning needs, some need remedial support in core academic areas, others need to learn good organizational and study skills, many require assistance with behavior modification, and still more are advanced learners in need of greater challenge. I endeavor to assist my students so that they can achieve academic success, as well as become active participants in their education.

Goal setting is another key component to being successful. Rather than assign goals, I work with my students to determine their strengths and the areas they want to improve. Then, together, we set about creating a plan to realize those goals, one step at a time. Journaling and weekly check-ins have proven invaluable throughout this process, as well as allowing my students to assert control.

In the tutorial classroom I work with students one-on-one as well as in small group. I have found in many cases that understanding course material and successfully completing homework and projects hinges on developing good organizational skills and study habits. It also helps when you take the time to establish a good teacher-student rapport so that teacher and student are exchanging ideas, rather than merely depositing information. Every child is unique. With that in mind I collaborate with my students in creating systems that meet their individual needs. Ultimately I aim to give my students the tools they need to achieve academic independence. I tutor students across all core academic areas and at varying levels - math (elementary, algebra, geometry, pre-calculus), English (vocabulary, reading comprehension, open-response writing), science (physics, biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology), history (civics, American history). I also have a working knowledge of Spanish and feel comfortable tutoring that subject at the beginner and intermediate levels.

Since the birth of my second son in the fall of 2012 I have been seeking part-time work as a tutor while I focus on raising my family and continue my own education. Through the University Without Walls program offered through UMass Amherst I am pursuing a degree in Youth Development and Health Education.

Knowledgeable, patient, caring and fun!

Randee teaches all subjects! Math, Science, English, Spanish, etc. She works hard at knowing the work before she gets to her lesson. She is organized and sets guidelines for every subject to make things easier for learning at school. Dependable and on time. She is a gem!

Patient and flexible

Randee is so very patient and flexible. My son is in high school and has some special needs, his current struggle is Biology. She has been so amazing in communication and patient in us working on finding the right volume and approach for him. It is helping and he has managed to raise his large test score in this class by over 30 points. I am sure the sessions with Randee are a part of why. She is knowledgeable and always flexible, willing to work with a child's individual needs and challenges. I highly recommend Randee if you are looking for a tutor that will go that extra mile. She is gem!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Randee is so wonderful to work with, she is kind and patient. She has made Algebra make sense to my daughter, who previously felt terrible about her math skills. Now my daughter feels much more confident about math, and the tears and worry are gone. I highly recommend working with her!
