About Nicholas

I am a Biology teacher in Hartford, CT, with three years of experience teaching high school Biology and one year of experience teaching Environmental Science. During this time, I tutored several students, helping to raise one student's grade from a C- to a B. I find that working with students in a one on one setting to be most helpful in helping a student learn.

I am passionate about teaching plant biology and evolution. I find the act of discovery to be most fulfilling and even more so when I can help a person understand a topic that they thought would be impossible to learn. Since I have taught biology at the high school and college levels, I have experience teaching and tutoring students of all ages.

I have a Master's degree in Ecology and Evolution from the University of Tennessee and a second Master's degree in Applied Biology from Acadia University in Wolfville, NS. I have three years of experience teaching high school Biology and one year experience teaching Environmental Science. Prior to teaching high school, I taught as an adjunct faculty at Pellissippi State Community College and Lincoln Memorial University in Knoxville, TN, for almost two years. During my Master's degrees, I worked on plant genetics and breeding systems, providing me experience in biostatistics, botany, genetics, and ecology. I also taught labs as a teaching assistant for Botany, Genetics, and Biology.

During my time as an undergraduate in college, I had difficulty taking tests in class. However, I worked hard and found a method for studying that worked extremely well for myself. Once I began having success in test taking, I managed to build the confidence in myself that I needed to succeed. I now thrive in helping students find the way of learning that helps them the best. If you are having difficulty in a subject, please feel free to let me know. I would love to help you learn!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Botany

I completed two master's degrees in Applied Biology and Evolution and Ecology, both focusing on the plant sciences and more specifically plant reproduction and resource allocation. I also taught the lab portion of Botany at the University of Tennessee. In addition to this, I was involved in collecting specimens for a new herbarium stationed at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN.

Genetics

My second Master's degree involved using AFLPs to determine the plant mating system of a Florida native species. I also taught the lab component of Genetics at the University of Tennessee. I also cover genetics in my high school class.
