About John

I have a love of learning and I remember the stumbling blocks I've experienced along the way to mastering a subject. This helps me to more easily be aware of how best to meet students where they are in their learning. It gives me great satisfaction to see "the light go on" when a student really gets it.

I have had two careers: corporate positions as an electronics engineer and supervisor; and then as an instructor/teacher of electronics in a post-secondary institution, and a public school math teacher for middle and high school students. I have worked for 18 years in electronics engineering and over 20 years as a math teacher, with a B.A. in Anthropology and a Masters in Education. I am a people person with technical expertise. Working one-on-one provides the best path for success.

I've enjoyed, and have had good success at helping people really understand various levels and disciplines of math. Sure, there's lots of important techniques to learn -- which we will do -- but seeing the whole picture with everyday applications while making sense of why it works makes the learning fun and easy to remember.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a professional license in math, grades 5-12, and have been teaching middle and high school math for 8 years. Learning where students are in their understanding of the subject and becoming aware of their learning style has helped me to be successful with a variety of personalities.
