I am excited by the opportunity to work one-on-one with students. I know that we can accomplish a great deal while having a good time. Reading and writing may be difficult and complex as both an art and a skill, but they do not have to be drab or painful. No matter what your English proficiency level is, I will remain an energetic person who is passionate about reading and writing. I have my Masters of Education in Instructional Practice and am a Greater Nashville region Teach for America alum.
Additionally, I majored in English during my undergraduate program in Baltimore, where I focused my studies on creative writing, literature, and music. I discovered my knowledge of music was the perfect compliment for a vocabulary or grammar lesson. I taught fifth grade for three years at an inner-city school in Nashville where I used music every day to engage students in learning and mastering the English standards. I have a knack for creating jingles and body movements to help with memorization or comprehension. I can assure progress, smiles, and the inspiration of creativity.
If you are looking for a tutor who will go above and beyond to make any assignment or task entertaining, then look no further. I use a combination of visual, auditory and kinesthetic techniques that appeal to all learners. I also have an endless pool of found- and personally-created resources to share with both parents and students alike. I am an avid reader of books of any sort, and will be committed to finding each scholar a book that fits both their reading level and interests. Additionally, I write every day. Because of my commitment to the written word, I can freestyle rap with ease. It's a skill I can teach you how to do. It's always fun and helps to build vocabulary!
If you are looking for a combination of experience and originality, please contact me. I care deeply about the power of literacy skills, and will motivate students to no end. From basic grammar practice to complicated research papers, I feel confident that I can help any student find joy in the written word. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
During my undergraduate studies at Goucher College, I was a Music minor. In order to complete this minor, it was required that I take and master 3 separate Music History classes. I have several academic papers on Music History, spanning from Bach to Joplin.
I began playing baseball at the early age of 4. I continued to play baseball, even as the only girl on my team, until I was 14. I played JV and Varsity softball in high school where I was the captain of my team. Currently I participate in recreational adult softball leagues.
I was previously employed at my undergraduate school's Writing Center. I have also worked as a copyeditor and marketing writer for several small business. Several of my creative writing pieces were published in small, independent magazines.
