About Richard

I'm an adjunct professor of Political Science with professional experience in business, broadcasting and social science research. I've also taught High School students with a variety of learning and emotional difficulties (Mass certified English 6-12 and Social Studies 6-12).

My specialty is to coach research writing in Political Science and History, specifically Foreign Policy, International Relations, Global Studies, and US Church and State relations. I'm also a terrific advisor for spoken word presentations.

Neither of my parents went to college (my dad left school in fifth grade) and my own education has been often non-traditional and informal, so I have a particular interest in advising students who have found themselves outside the typical boundaries of learning. I have a wide scope of non-academic, working-world experience that I can link directly to what is expected in school and what is practical and profitable in "real life."

All willing learners are welcome, regardless of test scores or grades in school (particularly public schools).

I'm available weekdays (M-F) in Springfield Ma and weekends (Fri-Mon) in the Boston area.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I studied bible interpretation for three years at Mt Hermon/Northfield prep school. I was a lector for St Paul's Catholic Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. My dissertation involved extensive biblical research.

Public Speaking

I was a professional radio announcer for several years at commercial radio stations in Massachusetts and Maine. I was a successful lead player in several school theater presentations. I was a performer in an a capella singing group in the 1990s.

Religion

My PhD dissertation researched Church-State relations from Antiquity to the Twentieth Century. I taught a course in Church-State relations at Northeastern University. I hypothesized and proved the connection between modern corporations and the Roman Catholic Church's concept of the Mystical Body of Christ.

Social Studies

I hold a PhD in Political Science from UMass Amherst. I've taught Social Studies at the High School level for a year. I am certified to teach Social Studies for grades 6-12 in Massachusetts public schools.

Study Skills

I'm a college adjunct professor with a PhD. I'm certified to teach public schools in Massachusetts grades 6-12 in both English and Social Studies. I successfully completed a PhD dissertation of over 300 pages.
