Cambridge College (Enrolled)
I am an Ivy League educated (Dartmouth College) English major. At Dartmouth I was taught a deep respect for and love of the English language both in reading (Chaucer to Frost) and writing. All of my professors were published authors. At Dartmouth I also had the good fortune of being employed part-time at Baker Library and learning (informally) from two mentors, Miss Priscilla March and Mrs. Marjorie Webb, about the benefits of the resources in great libraries. At Dartmouth I was also a staff writer/reporter for the college newspaper--the oldest one in the United States and entirely run by students.
For the past twenty years I have employed myself in the field of property management and maintenance as a small business owner/operator. In the course of my business operations, I had the opportunity to train over 50 full and part-time employees, some bi-lingual and with very limited knowledge of reading or writing. I found that I had the ability to effectively communicate with workers no matter what their level of comprehension of English was by studying our interactions carefully and adjusting my speech and writing (when necessary) to a level which suited each individual.
Now, I have decided to return to the field of education--specifically to use my talents to teach in the field of English Language Arts and Library Sciences. To this end I have enrolled in school again myself to obtain a master's degree in education. As both a teacher AND a student, I believe I bring an extra amount of empathy to the learning experience. Whether your goals in reading and writing are focused and limited, or far ranging and broad, we will develop a program that suits your needs and desires to improve your reading comprehension and effective writing skills. Beginning from wherever you are presently, we can expand and develop the skills you have into the ones that you desire. Learning should be an enjoyable and fun endeavor--a lifelong pursuit. Good reading and communication skills are an essential element in today's fast-paced, information intensive world. Advancing your skills in these areas will greatly improve the quality of your work and personal life. I hope that we can work together to accomplish those exact goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold Grammar, Reading, Writing, and Proofreading certifications. Also, I work with students to improve their inquiry and critical thinking skills all per current teaching standards.
