About Carole

My willingness to tutor comes from 17 years of teaching Art, English, Writing, and Grammar. I am an experienced editor, and can prepare students for MCAS, after working at Ludlow High School in their computer programs for students needing vocabulary and English instruction. My graduate degree from MASSArt has to do with curriculum and education. I am a published poet and have won an Edgar Allen Poe Award at the U. of Va. Over twenty years of facilitating writing group exercises allow me to work with students of any age. Private lessons available. I will work very hard to get each student up to the level of readiness that is necessary. I have sold my artwork professionally for over twenty five years. Additionally, I have portfolio experience with students of high school or college level.

I have used a computer lab for tutoring high school students preparing for the MCAS. The program was specifically for building/recognizing vocabulary. Basically, it was a drill procedure. If I am not using a computer, I would use drill and repetition, working with each student whose needs are going to be individual needs. Testing is given to assess the student's progress. If a student needs help with writing, prompts are given to stimulate a creative personal work on the part of the student. These are a few techniques. Each student's needs must be assessed differently as to grade level.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I minored in Anthropology at UMASS. My degree was a BA in developing curriculum for higher education. "Anthropology through Film" acquainted me with different cultures and their mores. I have traveled extensively in Guatemala and lived with the indigenous peoples there. An additional required course concerned the Anasazi Native American. I have studied the potters in the Acoma and San Ildefonso pueblos in Arizona and New Mexico.

Art History

I have taught Art History Survey, from the early Egyptian time period to Modern Art History. I have an extensive knowledge of every culture's art and how it impacted on the society of the time.

Drawing

I have taught beginning drawing at BayPath College. The course was developed by me and titled, "Anyone Can Draw." Advanced Drawing was also offered and I designed a course, called "Word and Image" which has been offered for many years by Elms College.

English

Poetry published; writing group for 19 years.

ESL/ESOL

I am certified in ACT English, English, Grammar, Literature, LSAT, Proofreading, Reading, SAT Reading and SAT Writing. I have worked with Japanese students at Baypath College in tandem with their ESL teacher. I have also taught Portuguese students at Ludlow High School, helping them prepare for SAT testing, through vocabulary study. I feel qualified to tutor ESL.

Literature

Literature was covered in both my degree requirements. I have a love for reading which I would pass on to my students. Both classic and modern writers are appealing to me for personal reading. Poetry is the genre in which I write, one that is directly related to my painting in its abstraction.

Painting

I am a painter. I have a portfolio and a website devoted to this practice. Over 30 years of painting professionally have given me the tools to work and to teach Art. Modern art is my passion and my spiritual inspiration.
