In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In reading, I teach students the following skills:
Summarizing, recalling and sequencing of events, identifying story elements- characters, setting, plot, motives/emotions of characters, and resolution, identifying different genres (fiction vs non-fiction), making predictions, inferences- drawing conclusions, reading fluency and comprehension, and assess students progress in reading comprehension, reading fluency, recalling and retelling events in stories, and offer recommendations to parents based on areas of struggle and strengths.
For curriculum purposes, I always reference to the MA standards in using books and materials appropriate to students reading level, provide enrichment activities to engage students interest in activities/assignments.
