About Barbara

I am a chemical engineer, and I also have business management degree.

I have been teaching and tutoring for over 30 years. My students range from elementary to college age, as well as the non-traditional students.

I specialize in math, science, and reading comprehension. I taught children in public charter elementary school and currently teach adults in a high school equivalency program.

I enjoy teaching and helping others learn. I love to see students work through their roadblocks and finally get it.

I look forward to our journey together and hope to meet you soon.

Go ahead - contact me, I know you will be glad you did.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

In Algebra we use letters (like x or y) or other symbols in place of unknown values.

For example: in x + 3 = 7, "x" is unknown.

We can find the value of "x" by subtracting 3 from both sides of the equal sign (=), like this:

Start with: x + 3 = 7
Subtract 3 from both sides: x + 3 - 3 = 7 - 3
Calculate: x + 0 = 4
Answer: x = 4

Algebra 2

OK. So what are you going to learn here?

You are going to learn about numbers, polynomials, inequalities, sequences and sums, many types of Functions, and how to solve them.

You will also gain a deeper insight into mathematics, get to practice using your new skills with lots of examples and questions, and generally improve your mind.

With your new skills you will be able to put together mathematical models so you can find good quality solutions to many tricky real world situations.

Business

I have an MBA with concentration in management.

Chemical Engineering

I have a degree in Chemical Engineering and have spent over 25 years working in the chemical industry. I have also been teaching and judging science fairs for most of those 25 plus years. I am currently a consultant for the chemical industry.

Cooking

I have been cooking for over 40 years. I hold an AA Culinary Arts degree from Newbury College in Brookline, MA. I've also worked as a banquet chef at Boston's Museum of Fine Art.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked for 20+ years in engineering. I also have an MBA. I have been teaching both elementary and adult education for several years. I last taught 5th grade in elementary education.

Geometry

Geometry is all about shapes and their properties.

Geometry (Ancient Greek: geo- "earth", -metron "measurement") is a branch of mathematics concerned with questions of shape, size, relative position of figures, and the properties of space.

Plane Geometry is concerned with flat shapes like lines, circles and triangles ... shapes that can be drawn on a piece of paper.

Solid Geometry is about three dimensional objects like cubes, prisms and pyramids.

A mathematician who works in the field of geometry is called a geometer.

Prealgebra

Pre-algebra is a common name for a course in middle school mathematics. In the United States, pre-algebra is generally taught between the fifth and eighth grades, although sometimes taught as early as the third grade for gifted students. The objective of pre-algebra is to prepare the student for the study of algebra.

Pre-algebra includes several broad subjects:
Review of natural number arithmetic
New types of numbers such as integers, fractions, decimals and negative numbers
Factorization of natural numbers
Properties of operations such as associativity and distributivity
Simple (integer) roots and powers
Rules of evaluation of expressions, such as operator precedence and use of parentheses
Basics of equations, including rules for invariant manipulation of equations
Understanding of variable manipulation
Manipulation and arithmetic with the standard 4-quadrant Cartesian coordinate plane

Pre-algebra may include subjects from geometry, especially subjects that further understanding of algebra in applications to area and volume.

Precalculus

Typically pre-calculus covers lines, functions, algebraic simplification, logarithms and exponents, and trigonometric equations. Generally, school text is used and we will complete practice exercises and review answers.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is the study of triangles.
