Saint Michael's College (History)
I have recently graduated from Saint Michael's College with a degree in History and also completed a minor in Education. I have experience in both classroom settings and one on one tutoring. I have volunteered in a 7th and 8th mixed special education class as well as a 6th grade public school class. Along with this, while studying abroad in South Africa I was able to volunteer at an after school program where I planned and coordinated activities for second grade students. It was through my volunteer work in South Africa that I realized how much I enjoy working with English language learners. I have also tutored a Senior in high school from Yemen who was looking to improve her English reading and writing in order to graduate. I am currently completing a TEFL course (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and will be certified in September.
I love tutoring because it allows for the student to get the individualized attention that they need and deserve. A classroom setting can often cause anxiety and pressure for students and I think that tutoring eliminates these factors and allows for a more open and conducive setting. It also allows for students to work on specific and direct aspects of their work that they need help with. I also love how rewarding tutoring can be for the tutor, as well as the student. Students are able to see their work improve gradually while the tutor is able to directly see their students grow and build upon their learning.
I am currently enrolled in a TEFL course that will be completed in September. I also have prior experience tutoring an ESL student.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I will be completing a 150 hour TEFL course in September. I have experience tutoring a high school ELL in as well as experience working with a class of non-native English speakers. I try to incorporate a variety of methods and learner styles into my tutoring in order to accommodate the needs of my tutees.
