About Kristen

Originally from the South Shore of Massachusetts, I am currently living in Southborough and recently finished my Master’s degree in Mild to Moderate Special Needs at Boston College. Prior to graduate school, I received my initial elementary teaching licensure while attending Northeastern University for Psychology and Elementary Education.

I made the decision to become a teacher after having an inspirational teacher during my freshman year in high school. I still remember the lessons that my freshman biology teacher taught us because her lessons were interactive and out of the box. I strive to be a tutor who can make students excited about what they are learning and to create individualized lessons that will make the information more memorable.

Throughout semesters of observations, two co-ops, and student teaching, I learned that I truly love working with all elementary school students, especially the lower grades. I really love the curiosity and excitement that students have, and being able to use it in my lessons to make school an enjoyable and memorable experience.

While working as a special education aide, I have run reading groups as well as various reading interventions for students in the classroom. I use a variety of activities that help students build fluency, accuracy, and comprehension skills.

While working in Boston and Newton, I have gained five years of experience designing lessons to complement the common core and to create modifications and accommodations for students with special needs.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping your child achieve their full potential!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I have five years of experience creating and writing lesson plans that revolve around the Common Core. I have taken classes at Northeastern University as well as Boston College where I practiced creating lesson plans using the Understanding By Design method, and my teaching experience has allowed me to use my knowledge of the Common Core to work with students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I attended Northeastern University for my elementary teaching license where I passed all of my MTELs the first time taking them. I have also received my early childhood teaching license as well as my master's degree and license to teach students with mild to moderate disabilities (k-8). I have spent the past five years working in a variety of elementary schools with students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Elementary Math

I have worked with students in kindergarten through sixth grade on their math skills. In school, I run small and individual math groups and interventions. I can work with students of all abilities to catch up or surpass grade level standards.

Handwriting

While working with kindergarten and first grade students, I have used various handwriting programs such as Handwriting without Tears. I have used hands-on activities such as Play-Doh and salt writing to make handwriting fun in addition to the use of handwriting books. I also have experience working with the occupational therapist in my school to learn hand strength exercises and handwriting techniques.

Phonics

I have spent two years working in kindergarten, and two years in fist grade where I have used the Fundations program to teach and build phonics skills. I like to use a variety of mediums such as white boards and magnet letters to build CVC words and to teach phonics rules.

Reading

Reading is one of the building blocks that is used across subjects. My experience running reading groups allows me to help students build accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.
