My passion for learning and teaching began during my visits to the public library as a young child. I developed an appreciation for reading and writing that I have nurtured throughout my life. As a high school student, I started helping young children to improve their reading skills while babysitting, eventually being asked to tutor. I seem to have a gift for engaging children and families in the process of learning. In addition to improving literacy skills, most children express a greater interest in books and sharing their own stories. I believe learning should be fun. It is a special moment whenever a child reads a book from cover to cover, or requests to write his or her own story. The best reward is seeing a child's confidence grow.
I earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Growth and Development, with an emphasis on the young child. As an undergraduate student, I held a work-study position at the campus-based childcare program. As a graduate student, I obtained a Master of Social Service. Internships included the maternal-child health units of a major teaching hospital and several preschool programs. While completing my studies, I was a full-time teacher for an early intervention center, working with children with a variety of developmental and learning differences. I also served as a substitute foster parent at a transitional care home for medically fragile children.
More recently, I have held leadership positions in Early Head Start and university Early Childhood Education programs. Responsibilities included coaching new teachers concerning language and social-emotional development for students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. I have also administered ABA trials in a public school preschool classroom. My approach is strengths-based and individualized for each student.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
