In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I completed ear training courses for my performance degree. I employed the skills and techniques I learned when I taught at the Academy of Performing Arts. Ear training is a huge part of the performing I do on the cape, it has helped me collaborate with other musicians, keep an audience entertained with requests, and move around in different keys of music.
I have 21 years of music experience. I began playing and learning music when I was ten years old. I have studied with private instruction on viola, voice and guitar. I have taught viola, violin, guitar, vocals, piano and ukulele. I am a local performing musician, playing everything from classical to folk rock to rock music with a full band, and I've played at weddings, private parties and local venues that support nightlife. I have acquired a lot of experience and I am still growing as a musician and learning new things about music every day.
I first picked up a guitar in 2005 while deployed with the Air Force to Iraq. I was asked to lead music for the worship services in the combat zone and I was only provided a guitar to accomplish this task. I quickly taught myself the basic skills and was able to accompany vocalists for the worship service. Once I returned from my deployment I continued to learn and practice guitar. I am proficient in rhythm style playing. I perform a lot of folk rock, and I can instruct basic beginner level electric guitar skills. I have played in many bands where I play guitar, as well as my solo act.
I have always had a passion for singing. In my formative years, I struggled with my technique because I had asthma as a kid and my lungs were very weak. My voice underwent a transformation in college when I studied with a classical style vocalist, a prominent teacher in Boston. I learned how to control and support my breath and breath properly and efficiently. I also learned how to expand my range and put more power behind my voice. I have extensive experience singing in front of a crowd. I have sung the national anthem at baseball games, I have sung with bands and sung solo stuff, I've sung for weddings, and I have taught vocals and vocal techniques. I can sing in a classical style as well as a more pop style. I also have experience using and teaching from the International Phoenetic Alphabet and am capable of teaching students to read Latin, Italian, Spanish, German, French, and English.
