About Greta

My favorite aspect about teaching? My students. For the last six years, in the classroom where I've taught high-school English at a college prep academy, I've affirmed a different student each day by writing all the strengths I see in them on a board at a front of the room. Whether I'm affirming their athletic abilities, kindness, sense of humor, or diligence, this daily affirmation of a different student has helped me see my pupils as WHOLE people. Students are not just grades or test scores; students are unique people with all kinds of gifts to offer. As I've stepped into professional tutoring this summer, I've realized that understanding where a student is coming from is of the utmost importance when structuring curriculum to maximize student success. So is encouragement. In my sessions with students, I try to make learning fun by capitalizing on each student's personalized interests, and I tailor my teaching to their unique learning styles. I also try to make sure they know that they are believed in and cared for.

I graduated with my Masters in Teaching in 2009 from Seattle Pacific University, and have been teaching AP Literature, 12th grade Language Arts, and 10th grade World Literature for the last six years. I also have served as Department Head for the last two years. Before that, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Washington, majoring in Drama and English. This summer, I've taken on tutoring, teaching SAT and ACT test prep, along with credit retrieval courses. I also specialize in helping students develop, write, and proofread their college admission essays.

My students tell me that I make learning fun; one young man informed me I "sneak the learning in." I love helping students discover the real-world relevance of what they're reading, and am an expert writing coach. My AP students consistently received average scores above a 4 (this last year's average was a 4.2), and alumni consistently tell me they received top grades on their papers in college after benefiting from my instruction. I am experienced in teaching ACT and SAT reading, and after teaching at a private Christian school, am well versed in the Bible and theological principles.

One of my favorite compliments from students, which I've been privileged to hear often, is "I can tell you actually care about me." I hope you consider working with me and inviting me into your life and educational journey. Please contact me to begin a conversation about your learning needs, and scheduling lessons.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I am well-educated in Biblical studies. I have spent years personally reading the text, and have supplemented my study with examining scholarly commentaries. I also have spent years teaching in a Christian school where theology and Biblical teaching was incorporated in all curriculum.
