Are you a high school or college student struggling with reading comprehension, writing, and grammar? Do you require experienced instruction and high level support for SAT, ACT or GRE/GMAT preparation, AP challenges, or those all-important college/graduate school application essays? With hard work, strong effort, and commitment, together we can achieve success. In short, I want my students to become the best writers and communicators possible. Grammar, punctuation, spelling, and written and verbal clarity are not mere "interests" for me; quite simply, they are passions. I have consistently boosted my student's scores on all standardized Verbal and Writing testing. In many cases, I continue to offer assistance with the Common Application, Statements of Purpose, and "school specific" essays. My investment in a student's education reaches far beyond test day.
I am a professional tutor and writer/editor by trade. A short synopsis of my experience is as follows: Editor of the Emory University award winning college paper; completion of a rigorous combined B.A. and M.A. degree program in English by age 21; a stint on Capitol Hill as a Congressional speech writer; nine years as Senior Writer, Producer, and Interviewer for MTV Networks in NYC; a decade as an Executive Producer at United Stations Radio Networks in NYC; and, most recently, a consultant for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in Washington, D.C. for their core initiative, The American Graduate. This last experience with PBS and NPR stations cemented my desire to return to tutoring full-time to address the sobering decline in education and, perhaps, do what I do best.
As the mother of three, (two in Graduate School and one midway through undergraduate study), I have learned firsthand how to strengthen and ingrain the essential skills of reading comprehension and proper written expression through hard work and effective methodology. With more than 25 years of tutoring experience at top tier private and public high schools and universities nationwide, and nearly 800 hours of WyzAnt tutoring alone, I am uniquely qualified to provide the highest level of support possible. If you are looking for a tutor who is superior in teaching, eager, compassionate, organized, an excellent communicator and truly an advocate for her students, I strongly recommend Kathleen. My 18 year son has been working with Kathleen and describes her as "awesome." He is so motivated to attend his sessions and upbeat when he finishes. As a parent, I am thrilled! Thank you Kathleen for your motivation and interest in finding the best in your students.
I have been tutored by Ms. W. for a couple of months now, and she helped me immensely! When I first took the SAT in November, my weakest point was the writing section. We spend a lot of time on writing essays for the SAT. Ms. W. is very knowledgeable in this area. She has a lot of patience and is willing to answer all your questions. She gives me helpful advice and tips on the reading and writing section, and I feel much more confident about the test. On the June SAT, my scores improved significantly. Out of the three sections, my writing score was the highest! I am surprised by my progress and will continue to work for my final SAT in October and college applications.
She is the perfect english tutor! Kathleen started working with my daughter after she had already taken the SAT once. After reviewing the test, she identified my daughter's weakness and gave her several tips and ways she could improve in that area. She continually sends us e-mails with websites and information regarding the topics they are working on. After just a few sessions, my daughter's SAT score improved considerably. She also helped her prepare for the ACT and will be assisting her with the college application essays.
Kathleen has been great. As this was our first experience with a tutor, we didn't know hat to expect. My 17-year old found the time he spent with her extremely helpful in preparing for his second round of SATs. I'd highly recommend Kathleen.
Kathleen is a tutor who is very knowledgeable in her field. She is also aware that students have different learning potential. We were in need of an SAT tutor and ACT tutor with only a short amount of time to prepare for these tests. Kathleen returned my e-mail promptly and we got started right away. She was very punctual, very prepared and provided great feedback after each session. My daughter had 2 two hour sessions before the SAT test and she improved both her reading and writing score by 30-40 points. I would highly recommend Kathleen as my daughter would also recommend her. She was very comfortable with Kathleen and felt she really understood how to teach the right concepts.
Kathleen has done a tremendous job working with my son. She has worked to identify my son's areas for improvement and has been instrumental in encouraging both he and myself during this time. She has provided me with specific ways in which to work with his teachers. Over the last few weeks she's devised a thorough plan on how to assist my son by "reteaching" him how to read effectively. I am confident that with Kathleen's assistance my son will become a stronger reader. We are both lucky to have her.
Kathleen W. was a fantastic tutor for my teenage daughter. She was very qualified, prepared, nice and comfortable to be with. She helped proofread and organize her college application essays. My daughter now feels confident with her work. I recommend her to anyone. If we find we need a little extra help in the future, she will be the one that we will call.
After the first meeting with Kathleen, my son said, "She gets me!" This was such a relief. After two sessions, we are thrilled with the work that Kathleen is doing. She has worked on English papers, SAT review and writing composition. Our son has made tremendous strides. He likes to have his work done ahead of his tutoring session so that the time spent working with Kathleen produces the best outcome. She is a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend her!
Kathleen is very professional and prompt. She worked with my two high school students separately to prepare them for the English portion of the ACT. She immediately had ideas of how to best meet their needs and tried to find ways to make the reading portion more interesting. My son and daughter reported to me that she is very knowledgeable and patient and is able to explain things well. My son in particular needed some extra work on vocabulary and Kathleen had a stack of flashcards made after our first session. We are looking forward to working with her further on creating essays for college applications. I would highly recommend Kathleen!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have researched Aspergers and Non-Verbal Learning Disorder in great detail, dealt with special education matters in the Public School and Private School systems, and also worked closely with therapists, psychiatrists, school guidance counselors, and teachers. I have attended lectures and symposiums on Aspergers and Non-Verbal Learning Disorder at Yale and NYU and was also invited to the White House by Tipper Gore and President Clinton to attend and contribute to the White House Conference on Mental Health in 1999.
In addition to my lengthy career as a successful writer and editor, I have helped innumerable students, including my own three children, craft genuine, comprehensive, and ultimately winning college application essays. I help students create effective outlines, highlighting their particular interests, achievements, and general life experience. While I assist in helping to edit and develop strong, creative essays that address the prompt, I take care to ensure the essay reflects the students' own voice and personality. I am keenly aware of how to remain true to the student and the overall application process.
I am a specialist in GRE preparation, with particular emphasis on the Verbal and Essay Writing portions. I am currently preparing several college students for the next GRE and understand the stress of managing heavy course loads and graduate school requirements. My students are encouraged to take advantage of my ability to work with them online, as a supplement to our in-person tutorials. This is of particular importance if there is a need to strengthen writing skills and overall understanding of the Analytical Writing Assessment.
I have been writing and/or giving speeches for most of my adult life. I was very active in jr. and sr. high school in positions that required public speaking and held leadership positions at Emory University (Rush Chairman of my sorority and Editor of the college newspaper) that required constant public speaking roles. My first job out of graduate school was as a speech writer for a congressman on Capitol Hill. I spent years in NYC interviewing musicians and actors and have delivered many a speech both in and out of the office. And, finally, I spent nearly a decade writing and directing weekly scripts for my syndicated radio show.
I have successfully prepared innumerable students for the SAT, with particular emphasis on reading comprehension. I am certified by a nationally recognized organization in this field as well and have prepared my own set of informative and interesting tests to allow students to learn how to "read" between the lines. There is a method to test-taking and the SAT is no exception.
