About Ronni

I received a bachelor's degree from Vassar College and a master's in journalism from Boston University and then worked for more than 30 years at a newspaper, covering arts and writing stories about interesting people and topics. I now have a freelance writing and editing business through which I am able to continue my love of writing and to use the editing skills I learned through my job. I think I'm a good tutor because I am able to explain things clearly and concisely, which is what you have to do in the newspaper business.

I spent a year tutoring fourth graders to prepare for standardized testing. I don't think they wanted to be there, so I have found more satisfaction in my recent tutoring as a volunteer with the Literacy Project, which offers free ESL classes to adults. They either speak a different language or are English-speakers who have difficulty reading and writing. I enjoy helping others with the skills I have learned. It is great when someone "gets it" and a new world opens up to them.

As a mother of three children, I learned to be patient. That ability carries over into my tutoring. Also my love of reading and of writing translates into an enthusiasm for helping others improve their skills. Plus, I like to think I have a good sense of humor, and I want students to have fun during the time they are with me.

As a reporter often working on deadline, I learned to work quickly, so when you contact me you can be sure I'll respond right away. Because I have tutored a range of ages (and helped my own children with their college essays), you'll find that I am versatile in the needs I can address. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

To earn my bachelor's degree in English from Vassar College, I wrote many essays on a wide range of topics, and I got many As for my efforts. You better know your grammar if you are writing at this level!

I polished my skills while getting a master's in journalism and then on the job as a newspaper reporter for more than 30 years. Writing on deadline made me learn to write clearly and concisely, without any wasted words.

ESL/ESOL

I have learned about ESL as a classroom assistant at the Literacy Project in Northampton, Mass., which provides instruction to adults who either speak a different language or who have had difficulty learning. It is now more commonly called ELL, for English Language Learners.

The primary teacher breaks the class into small groups so that the assistants can provide more individual tutoring. I did a lot of reading to prepare for this position and have also learned a lot on the job.

Also, I have fun making it fun to learn!

Literature

Being an English major in college entailed reading literature in a wide range of styles and from a wide range of cultures and countries.

As an avid reader, I always have a book with me. I also belong to a book group in which we read about a book a month and then have fun discussing its themes and content.

Reading

I always have a book or newspaper with me. I am an avid reader and have been so for a long time.

I belong to a book group in which we read a book a month and then get together to discuss its themes and content. The novel is my favorite form, although I also enjoy well-written non-fiction books.

Being a reader has helped me become a better writer.

Writing

I have always enjoyed writing, going back as far as my elementary school days. I liked it so much that I chose it as my profession.

When I worked at The (Springfield) Republican for more than 30 years, sometimes I had to write as many as two stories a day, although I could spend more time on longer pieces. Writing on deadline for a general audience taught me how to explain my subject matter clearly. I try to write like I speak, without getting too complicated.

As a freelancer I write on different topics for a range of publications, interviewing people and attending events and then summing it up in a cohesive article.

Good teacher and helpful — Ronni could help me a lot on the first class. She worked on my pronunciation and my writings. She is a very good teacher and could reach my specifics demands. ...
