About Jason

My name is Jason M. and I am a devoted teacher, parent, and father. I earned an MFA in Writing and Poetics from Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, in 1998.

I received my BFA in Creative Writing with a Minor in English from Tampa University in Tampa, Florida, in 1995.
I am a Certified Teacher of English, 5-12, by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Recently, I was a High School English teacher for the Massachusetts Virtual Academy. Prior to that, my primary job was as an English Teacher/Dorm Parent/Coach at the Linden Hill School in Northfield, Massachusetts. After my 14th year there, sadly, the school was forced to close its doors due to financial reasons. Linden Hill was the oldest middle school for dyslexic boys in the country and I was honored to have taught there. During those 14 years I worked with hundreds of boys, many of whom had dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, or both. Others simply had difficulty in staying at grade level with reading and writing. I utilized a multistory approach, influenced by the Orton-Gillingham approach for reading fluency and writing. The classes I taught ranged from one-on-one, up to five students. The intimate, structured, classroom was most conducive to learning for the dyslexic or ADHD child, though I believe strongly that a one-on-one setting greatly benefits learners of any age or ability level.

I am capable of teaching students of any grade level. I recently taught part-time at the RH Conwell Community Education Center, in Worthington, Massachusetts. I taught grades 1-6 while there and taught students in grades 5-9 at Linden Hill.

I make learning fun because I believe that students learn best when they are interested, and "tune out" when they are bored. I use music, photography, art, and video to peak the interest of the students. The truth is, I believe there is no one correct way to teach. Every child is wonderfully different and they have different learning styles. The best way I can sum up my philosophy on teaching would be,

"If a child can't learn the way we teach, we must teach the way a child can learn."

I am an avid reader, writer, serious student of mythology, folk tales, poetry, and stories of all kinds. I love to play piano, guitar, and sing (acoustic music, Dylan, CSN, Simon & Garfunkel, Randy Newman, among others). I enjoy cooking. Love to spend time with my two amazing children, Jack and Dylan.

I look forward to having a chance to help your children learn. Please be in touch!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
