About James

I have a Ph.D. in Political Science from Rutgers University and years of teaching experience, including at Rutgers, Denison University, University of Notre Dame, and Southwestern College of Kansas.

Thus, I have professional experience teaching in all settings ranging from 130 person lectures to one on one tutoring and everything in between, and specific training to that end which is less common at the university level (perhaps surprisingly). Further, I have taught in all sorts of institutional environments and to people of many cultures even though all are within America--rural Kansas, for example, is a very different place from urban New Jersey. And I love it all, and liking the feeling of bringing students into the fold not only so that they do well on their assignments, but so that they feel enough mastery to progress on their own.

I like the material. I like teaching. And I like to have fun. As such, I find it best to do all three at once. Perhaps, ironically, I think it leads to better outcomes, especially with students who have been struggling in some way--indeed, perhaps that is the source of the struggle, i.e. it hasn't been enjoyable... so something feels wrong.

Note: The label asks for qualifications, but the box to fill out what I think makes me a great tutor. I like to think they are the same, though I placed the emphasis on the former; if it is credentials that are asked for, though, I have been blessed with a wonderful education such that I wish to share it, I have my doctorate, I have pedagogical training, I have experience teaching and tutoring, and I'm really good not only at taking standardized tests, but in explaining them (Hint: They really are out to get you. But we can use that.).

Only the modern educational system could make things like science and the arts boring; it's tragic, but I think a "kung fu approach" to the academic disciplines can transform things to make them your own.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Criminal Justice

My minor field for my Ph.D. was public law, which includes both a theoretical and working understanding of the criminal justice system. Similarly, I have taught courses such as "Crime and Punishment, "Law & Society," and "Politics of Criminal Justice" on many occasions.

English

I have a Ph.D. from Rutgers University in Political Philosophy, which is a writing and literature intensive field, and I have taught reading and writing intensive courses at several schools, including the University of Notre Dame and Denison University. Moreover, I worked for two years in the award winning Writing Program at Rutgers, where I was trained in teaching and, specifically, tutoring for the writing center in expository writing, basic composition, technical writing, and reading comprehension.
