About Abigail

I'm a special education elementary/middle school teacher who just moved here after three years of teaching in NYC. I love working with students one-on-one to give them support exactly where they need it. There is nothing better than seeing a lightbulb go off when a student finally understands a difficult concept. I worked as a therapist before becoming a special education teacher, which I find gives me a unique perspective when working with students with special needs. When I'm not teaching I enjoy art, theatre, jogging, traveling, and being outdoors.

I have experience with many different curriculum, including EngageNY and CGI. I enjoy finding ways to make math useful and relevant instead of just memorizing lots of formulas!

Reading and writing are two of my favorite subjects to teach. I have experience teaching basic phonics and decoding skills as well as higher-level comprehension.

I was an elementary school assistant teacher for two years and an elementary school student teacher for a year and a hal before spending three years teaching at the elementary level in NYC. I have my elementary license in both NY and MA.

I love photography! I do it as an avid hobby, both in my local community and abroad. A couple of summers ago I went to Nicaragua to help teach photography to kids there, and it was an incredible experience.

I have degrees in both psychology and special education and am a licensed special education teacher in both NY and MA. I was a special education teachers aide for two years before getting my Master's degree. This is my fourth year working as a special education teacher and I love it!

Please feel free to contact me if you think I could be of use to you and your scholar!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a master's degree in elementary education and am a licensed elementary school teacher in both Massachusetts and New York.

Photography

I have been studying photography for the past 15 years and have had work in galleries in MA and CT. I recently had the experience of traveling to Nicaragua to help teach photography to students in a community center there, and it was an incredible experience. I believe that photography is a powerful tool of self-expression as well as being a beautiful art form.

Special Needs

I have two master's degrees, one in psychology and one in special education. I am a licensed special education teacher in both Massachusetts and New York.
