About Brandon

I am incredibly excited to help you better your understanding of chemistry! In my profile, I will outline the reasons that I think that I am qualified to serve as your tutor. But make no mistake, the only metric that matters is whether you feel that I can help you take positive steps towards your goal (be it a better understanding of the material, earning a better grade, passing a standardized test, etc.).

Content Knowledge:
I hold a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Chemistry.

Teaching Experience:
I am a former chemistry teacher with 5 years of experience teaching high school Introductory Chemistry and AP Chemistry, as well as one year of teaching General Chemistry I and II at the college level. I also taught English in Japan for one year and I have countless hours of informally tutoring my peers throughout high school, college, and graduate school. In that time, I have developed many methods and resources for presenting the material in different ways so that very diverse groups of people have been able to understand key concepts.

Pedagogy:
I strive to teach my students to be able to solve problems when I am not there. So, I work with students to break down a difficult, complex question into smaller, much easier to answer questions that will lead them to the correct response. I also emphasize learning "number sense" so that students can be more confident in the answers that the calculate for questions that involve math. But most importantly, I aim to be flexible and sensitive to each person's learning style--different people learn in different ways!

Beyond Teaching Chemistry:
Sports occupy a large amount of my free time. I have played ice hockey since I was young and I still get to play once a week in a men's league. I also play in a pretty competitive ultimate frisbee league! Recently, I began working as an EMT which has been providing me with great new experiences and plenty of new things to learn. Finally, I have been taking classes in various subjects, so I am very in tune with how challenging it is to be a student!

Some Final Words:
Do what's best for you! If you're struggling with chemistry and looking on Wyzant for a tutor, then you're already taking steps in the right direction. I sincerely hope that we can work together to achieve your goals in chemistry. I am looking forward to the opportunity to prove the truth to these words in my profile.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
