Want to build your confidence, improve your grades, or expand your knowledge? I would love to help!
I have tutored students ages 7-60 for the past 8 years, and taught at the middle- and high-school levels for 3 years. I moved to Boston from North Carolina in July, where I taught at Boston Latin Academy before beginning grad school in Latin at U-Mass Boston.
My two specialties- Latin, and ESL- enrich each other and help my students succeed. Through tutoring ESL/ESOL, I have immersed myself research and practice on methods for language learning. I bring these research-based approaches to my work as a Latin tutor, incorporating "active" methods like conversation and games alongside traditional study of grammar. Students-- especially those previously confused and intimidated by Latin-- have told me they found these approaches fun, helpful, and confidence- (and grade-) building.
As a tutor, I work with students' individual learning styles to help Latin "make sense." I have a strong record of improving grades by tutoring: a recent tutee brought his grade up in Latin I from a C to an A- within 6 weeks of tutoring; another was delighted to receive a 96 on a major test in Latin III, in which she had previously made Cs and Bs. I also have experience working with students with a variety of learning differences.
As an ESL/ESOL tutor, my experience studying a variety of languages-- including Latin, Greek, Spanish, French, German, and Italian-- helps me teach English effectively, with empathetic understanding of the struggles of second-language learning, and a linguist's understanding of the differences and similarities between English and other languages. I love giving lessons that are customized to a student's interests, lively, fun, and full of opportunities to speak, read, write, and hear authentic English.
I work with students ranging from 12-60, with English levels from beginner to advanced. I tutor business English, conversational English, English academic writing for students looking to improve their writing for university admission, or any mix of these. My students say that my lessons are fun and challenging, and often refer friends to me for ESL/ESOL tutoring.
I believe education works best when it's fueled by the joy of discovery and creativity, and that good teaching aims at developing independent, critically-minded lifelong learners. I build strong relationships with my students, and they characterize me as warm, enthusiastic, demanding, and engaging. Want to build your confidence, improve your grades, or expand your knowledge? My twins are in Latin 3 in high school. Daphne has been helping them translate the Aeneid. She reviews the various grammatical concepts that they encounter in the text. She has been invaluable in helping them make the difficult transition from textbook Latin to authentic Latin. They thoroughly enjoy working with Daphne, and with her help they gain a genuine sense of accomplishment. She is an excellent teacher! We feel very lucking to have found her.
Daphne tutored me in Latin 3 and I honestly can say that I don't know if I would have passed the class without her. With her help I was able to bring my grade up from a low C to a high A! Not only was I able to bring my grade up, but I feel as if I actually learned something and understand the language much better. Although I had lost interest in Latin and was only focused on passing the class, she made Latin interesting and fun. She really knows (and loves) the language, and was a very knowledgeable teacher. Thanks for all the help Daphne!
Daphne has been tutoring me for about 2 months now. Every time we meet I leave feeling more confident in my latin skills than when I came. I highly recommend her to anyone needing help in latin!
It is hard to find a Latin tutor at all so my daughter is so lucky to have the likes of Daphne who is patient and knowledgeable. She is also available whenever we need her.
Daphne tutors my son, who is 11, in Latin twice a week. He started with some foundation as the school he attended before our transfer to PA began introducing the subject in 3rd grade. He always just seemed to drudge through it and did ok but since we have found Daphne he looks forward to his lessons and her approach is such that he is absorbing far more information than he was in the classroom. She is patient and encouraging and goes the extra distance to post assignments and screen shots of what they did during that day's lesson so that I can print them out for both review and records. I always ask my son for his feedback and he says," She's really, really good! I actually understand more about the language, I'm not just memorizing words and charts." She has just been phenomenal!
Daphne is tutoring our daughter in Latin III. Daphne has been very encouraging and easily built a nice rapport with our daughter. In just a few sessions, our daughter is having an easier time with translations and has found Daphne's knowledge, explanations, suggestions and instruction very helpful. She is feeling more confident and less discouraged about Latin in general. We would highly recommend Daphne!
I'm a qualified Latin teacher, having taught students from elementary school through AP Latin. In addition to my classroom teaching, I have six years of Latin tutoring experience, and my students say I make Latin clear, do-able, and fun. I've completed graduate work in Classics at UNC-Chapel Hill, and am currently enrolled in a MA program in Latin with teaching licensure at U-Mass Boston, where I study ways to make Latin teaching more effective and engaging.
As a life-long language lover and teacher of Latin and Greek, I'm passionate about helping students harness the power of words. I use a "from the roots up" approach that explains root words, prefixes, and suffixes so students can appreciate the nuance and history of words and be empowered to form intelligent guesses about words they encounter. Whether your goal in studying vocabulary is to ace the SAT, ACT, or GRE, or simply take your English communication to a new level, I would love to work with you!
