About Ben

Bottom line...I want to help you excel in Math, Science, and Microsoft Office Applications! I have a passion for these subjects and I love teaching them and helping students succeed!

I’m currently employed as a Research Scientist in the Cambridge/ Kendal square area where we are focused on developing new therapeutics to help treat people with cancer, heart disease, and kidney disease. Through tutoring I hope to help and inspire the next generation of scientists!

In addition to my professional career as a scientist, I have a real passion for teaching. From 2007 to 2009 I left my professional career and moved to Bangkok, Thailand to explore my interest in teaching. In Thailand I became ELS (English as a Second Language) certified through the Cambridge Institute. With this certification, I was quickly employed at Keera-Pat International School where I taught High School Biology and Physics as well as Middle School Physical Science and Algebra. My students were from many different countries including, Thailand, Russia, and Singapore. As English was a second language for many of my students, I was challenged to develop hands-on approaches that would help students understand key concepts. As an example, my seventh grade Physical Science students were having difficulty understanding the text book explanation of the rock cycle. Rather than forcing the textbook, I decided to develop a hands-on exercise using chocolate! Students would grind up the chocolate to represent sedimentary rock and melt it with hot pads to represent metamorphic rock. The students were very engaged in the lesson and their test scores were much improved as a result!

In addition to teaching middle school and high school science, I have experience teaching and tutoring science at the undergraduate level. From 2010 to 2012, while completing a Master of Science degree, I worked as a teaching assistant and tutor for undergraduate Cell Biology. This class was large with more than 160 students and I was often called to lecture in the professor’s absence on topics ranging from Apoptosis to GPCR coupled receptors. As the lecture was so large, I held help sessions and regular office hours for students having trouble or wishing to discuss exam questions. This was a great experience!

My teaching philosophy can be best described as making learning fun! We have fun but we stay on task. If one approach doesn't work we try another. I’m also very patient and feel that the best learning occurs when students are not put under too much pressure.

My expertise is in science and math (General Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, and Algebra). I also have a personal interest in Microsoft Applications and I’m considered by many, at my place of business, to be the go-to person for Microsoft Excel related questions. I also have some programming experience in Visual Basic and have developed applications to speed up repetitive Microsoft Excel tasks.

I’m confident that together we can take your learning to the next level!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
