About John

Hello,

I'm a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. I have my master's degree in education. I've taught science, math, English and chess in several schools in the Boston area and have worked as a program officer for a 501c non-profit that teaches chess in the schools. I have over 15 years of experience teaching and playing the game. I started my own after school chess programs in DC and Ohio. I've played in national and international chess tournaments, including with the Harvard Chess Team. I was a 4 time High School State Chess Champion and have received numerous accolades for my chess teaching. I have extensive experience tutoring elementary, high school and adults students in a variety of areas. I love to work with students and see their progress. In order to address the students needs, I first access their problem areas and develop an individual plan for each student. I've learned that each student I tutor has a different method of learning. I want to address the individual needs of every student I tutor. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I have over 15 years of teaching chess experience. I'm a nationally ranked chess player, was a 4 time high school state chess champion and have started several after school chess clubs in Washington, DC, Ohio and Boston. In addition, I was a teacher for several years with the US Chess Center and a program officer for Chess Corps. I've taught students of all ages and abilities how to play chess. I'm currently the Vice President of the Massachusetts Chess Association. I've been a teacher in the Boston Public schools for over 5 years and have a masters degree in education from Harvard University. I played on the Harvard Chess team and competed in international chess tournaments.

Excellent with children! — John has recently started tutoring our 7 year old daughter in chess and she is enjoying her lessons and picking up skills quickly. I was impressed with his background when looking for a tutor and like John's approach with children. He is very patient and encourages them to think things through and come up with the right moves. We are looking forward to her competing in tournaments this fall and be ...
