I have 9 years of experience teaching all levels of high school mathematics in the public schools. I also have more than 8 years of experience tutoring mathematics to students ranging from 7 years old through adult learners.
I have taught and/or tutored mathematics from basic addition and subtraction through calculus. I have also helped students prepare for the SAT (Aptitude and Subject), ACT, GED, MCAS and SCAT tests in mathematics.
All this experience has taught me that all students can learn math and that I have (and continue to develop) excellent skills in convincing students of their abilities and helping students succeed and even excel in mathematics (even if they have had difficulties in the past). John has been working with my daughter on and off for approximately 6 months. He has always bent over backwards to find time to accommodate my daughter's schedule, which varies from week to week. John is very reliable and always comes to a session well prepared, with all necessary materials and ready to jump right in. His subject knowledge is comprehensive and his teaching style is engaging. I would highly recommend John to anyone who is looking for a math tutor, for a student of any age.
I appreciate John for working with my daughter for her Pre-calc. He very much helped her to come up to speed by making her understand of trigonometry and few other chapters and thus bringinf her upto speed in school work.
We just started working with John and my daughter liked him right away after the first lesson, and looked forward to more lessons with John.
John is an active listener who responded and changed up his way of doing things to suit my daughter's need to write things herself. It made a big difference in her understanding the material.
John worked very well with my son. When their time was up, my son walked out with confidence! Thank you, John!
Helped my daughter figure out a math problem & discover an error in the book, which then helped with problem solving thx!
My son needed some help with his AP Calculus class. I reached out to John and he replied on the same day. We were able to schedule a lesson within a few days.
He arrived on time, prepared and ready to go. He went over my son's recent quizzes and homeworks. He was able to show him where he was going wrong and how he could improve his performance. I look forward to John helping my son for the rest of the semester. Well worth the investment.
I told John what I was working on in school the week before we met so he came prepared to work on that specific topic. At our first lesson I showed John what we did in my class the very day we met. He looked at the material and was able to very quickly change plans and show me how to approach the new material in a clear and organized way. I went to school the next day feeling prepared and ahead of my classmates.
John is a patient tutor who helps explain in detail the concepts being taught. He also comes well prepared for lessons.
My son was glowing after his first tutoring session because he was so happy! It was nice to see his self esteem at it's best. He said, "Now I finally get it!" He was singing a monomial rap and I even caught him in the act of working on his math independently later in the day…a rare sight!
John was wonderful and we are looking forward to having him back next week!
John did a great job of preparing my son for his AP exam and final exam in Calculus. The focus of each tutoring session was left to the student, however John was great about back tracking so fundamental calculus concepts were understood before moving onto the next topic. He always provided an excellent summary of what topics were covered during each session and which topics required further exploration. I would highly recommend John as a tutor for AP calculus: I only wish we had found him sooner in the school year.
We've had a number of tutors work with my son but John is one of the best. He is calm, thorough and works very well with my son. I would recommend him to any one.
My daughter's math confidence has grown tremendously in just a couple of sessions with John. John's encouragement and knowledge have been just what she needed. Thank you!!
John was a great tutor for my daughter and helped her prepare for the math SAT test. He accommodated her busy schedule and was flexible with her tutoring times. He was always prompt, polite, and easy to get in touch with. After having her take a diagnostic test before their first session, he quickly identified what she needed the most help with and focused the sessions on those areas. He was well prepared for the sessions and, in addition to working with her in person, he provided her with several handouts on time management, test taking skills, practice problems etc. My daughter and I highly recommend John as a tutor!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken many courses to learn various programming languages. I have many years of professional experience as a programmer using many of these languages. And I also have had many years in teaching/tutoring others in how to program with these languages. These languages include, but are not limited to: C, Java, Pascal/Modula-2, Fortran, REXX and assembly language.

In addition to the strengthening and improvement of existing Math skills, my Math SAT preparation also includes:
-- "SAT Math". Many problems on the SAT are unlike any that students may have experienced in their Math classes at school. I help my students with "SAT Math" by a) expanding and deepening their understanding of the ideas behind Mathematics; b) showing them how to think on their feet and apply basic Mathematical concepts in novel situations; and c) pointing out a number of helpful "Have you ever noticed how..." facts that school teachers rarely have the time or mandate to teach.
-- Test-taking skills. The SAT is graded in a manner different from the way tests are graded at school. I help my students understand this and help them learn how to use this understanding to develop a test-taking strategy that will help them maximize their scores.
