About Kelly

Hi, my name is Kelly. I am a recently published author with a Masters in English and Creative Writing. I have spent several years working with an adolescent population both in academic and residential settings, working one-on-one with struggling students in the classroom and providing homework aid to students at home. Much of my work has been done with students dealing with a variety of social and emotional issues, and I have worked primarily with teenagers that have been diagnosed with Autism and Aspergers. My recent graduate studies have prepared me both academically and professionally to teach English in a classroom setting, and I cannot be more excited! I am well versed in both SAT and ACT writing prep, as well as in other areas of English and Language Arts.

I love working with students and think it is important to form a healthy working relationship if you are to improve writing skills and prepare for standardized testing. I look forward to the chance to work with you!

Sincerely,
Kelly D. (BSW, MA)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Literature

I studied literature extensively during both my undergraduate courses and in the pursuit of my graduate degree. Through my classroom management courses I refined techniques for teaching the study of literature to others. I also currently work with middle school aged students with special needs to help them complete book reports and other assignments related to the comprehension of classroom reading materials.

Proofreading

The creative writing courses taken during the pursuit of my MA required me to peer critique and extensively proofread the writing assignments of fellow classmates. We were graded on our ability to copy edit and correct grammatical errors on a line by line basis. My current professional career also requires me to facilitate the proofreading of papers and assignments done by the clients with whom I work. Through aiding them, I aim to strengthen their capability to understand and utilize grammar correctly.

Reading

My dual degrees in English led me to do a great deal of study in the area of reading and comprehension. Currently I work professionally with special needs middle school clients to facilitate their reading comprehension and provide them with the tools they need to read at a grade appropriate level. Many of my clients exhibit reading skills that lag far behind that of their classmates, and through homework help and reading assistance I aid these clients in boosting their reading abilities to a higher level.

Vocabulary

My studies in English during both the pursuit of my undergraduate degree and in the pursuit of my Masters degree led me to spend a great deal of time expanding my vocabulary database. My proficiency in vocabulary also stems from a passion for writing, which can be seen in the example of Rogue Elegance, the novel I've recently published prior to submitting it as a final graduate thesis manuscript. My current professional career requires me to have a strong grasp on vocabulary as many of my clients are preparing for standardized testing and as such need assistance when studying new words to commit to memory.
