I have been tutoring for over 10 years, both in an academic setting and privately in students homes. I enjoy working individually with students because I can see an ongoing increase in their understanding of and proficiency in a particular subject. Initially I assess a student's learning style, strong points, and weak points, and from there I determine the best way to approach any subject that the student wishes to focus on. It's a wonderful feeling for both the students and me when the "light goes on" and they have a better understanding of a language concept that had been puzzling them. Many students and their parents have referred me to other students. Also, upon graduation from University of Massachusetts Boston, where I tutored English, ESL, history, and German, I was presented with the Tutor of the Year Award. This distinction came as a total, but pleasant, surprise to me.
In addition to tutoring, I also teach English as a Second Language - ESL, Basic English, First Year English Literature and Composition, Public Speaking, and other literature classes at a small college in Boston. During the summer I teach ESL to high school students who come to the Boston area to improve their English skills and enjoy the summer in this area. My skills in all levels of English, including grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing are well-developed and constantly being strengthened and reinforced. Therefore, I can pass on my knowledge to my students and be helpful to them!be of great assistance to degree in a foreign language. I have also taught English as a Second Language to both adults and international students.
Personally, I love reading, traveling, theater, art, music, film, and animals. When I tutor, I find out the student's interests and relate them to what he or she is working with. Ellen S. helped me to get prepared for the TOEFL test in only 9 weeks. We met once a week on a day which pleased us the best. My day plan is very busy, so I was very thankful that Ellen always tried to squeeze 1.5 h in her day plan! As a tutor Ellen was always very friendly, calm and patient! These lessons with Ellen are the perfect fit for me. Currently, we work with texts and this method totally meets my expectations in the sense that I learn a lot of vocabulary & I can improve my pronunciation by reading out loud, so in the end I will speak more fluently English. An extra advantage with these individual tutor lessons, is that Ellen and I can talk and discuss about what recently happened on the news or other typical things and habits in the USA which are different in my country. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a college English instructor who teaches literature, writing technique and grammar, I use these classroom skills when I tutor students individually. The student benefits because I can focus on his or her personal strengths and struggles with the language, or with any particular assignment he or she needs to work on.
I have taught English as a Second Language to adults at Training Resources in Brockton, Massachusetts. While I was at University of Massachusetts Boston, I was a teaching assistant in an English class specifically for non-native speakers of English; and I tutored the students in these classes individually as well. For three semesters at Northeastern University I taught College Writing and Writing for Graduate School to both undergraduate and graduate international students. Many of the students that I tutor are non-native speakers; they have told me that I have helped them considerably.
As a college English instructor, I specialize in both Basic English and First Year English Composition. Both of these classes stress the fact that proper grammar is a vital component of all aspects of English writing. In my classes I focus on the grammar topics that present the most obvious problem, such as noun/verb/pronoun agreement, run-on sentences, and sentence fragments. Then I see what other problems seem to be evident in my students' writing assignments, or what problems seem to be troubling them the most. When I tutor, I focus on the individual student's grammar issues and work closely with the student to explain and clarify those issues.
I have had many years' experience working with students to prepare for both the SSAT and the ISEE. The students feel more confident about the test after we have discussed and reviewed the vocabulary, reading, and math sections together. They learn more about the strategies needed to improve their scores.
I have been teaching Public Speaking on the college level for five years. The course includes teacher's instruction and student participation in all types of speeches including personal statement, informative, persuasive, demonstrative and ceremonial speeches.
The SAT verbal section consists of essay writing, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and grammar. I have been working with high school students on all of these portions of the SAT for over ten years. I can help students with strategies that are specifically focused on the SAT.
